Compared to what, exactly? If you look at it as an action movie with a prime purpose of being a CGI fest of action and warfare, it did that pretty well, the acting was average, the cgi was average, everything about it was average, it wasn't bad.

The problem with Cage isn't totally to blame on his movie choices, sadly.

He's always been an actor who goes 110% - when he nails it, he nails it big time. Unfortunately 70% of the time him giving 110% of himself produces a very cheesy over the top performance.

So it can be said I guess that Cage is admirable in that he's never played it safe. Most actors will choose safe roles and give half assed performances until they smell oscar bait.
