Nuclear would be better, since solar panel is basically like harvesting power from a nuclear reactor 150 million kilometers away.
The EU needs to hurry up and build (public-use) fusion reactors already.
But but but I want to keep burning oil like crazy in my BMW :( It's fun :(

Engine retune, switch oil type and gasket type and run it on methanol.
I heard geothermal energy was a viable alternative.
Those downtalking nuclear energy will be eating their words in a few decades.
It's remarkable to think about how in geologic time things take forever. How long does it take a glacier to slice through a mountain?
But somehow we humans have managed to burn through oil that took eons to form, and we did it in less than time than the United States has existed. One thing is for sure, when the collapse comes it's going to be specatcular!
That's absurd. I don't foresee any collapse within modern countries. Any reasonably middle class person would just go get a fucking electric car with a windmill to charge the fucker.

Sort of - you can do it ANYWHERE but the more deeper you have to go = more $ it cost
And theres slight risk of hitting a fault line and causing a Earth quake

True. Worst case scenario?
We'd be burning or gasifying coal.

Yeah, the entire middle class will just head on down to the local Electric-car-with-a-windmill depot and buy the economy pack.

also the reson we drill near volcanos is the grounds hoter = more power less needed drilling
Make more..oil?
As far as I know oil is not a renewable resource
It is a fossil fuel
edit petroleum that is

We are onto something..
we need the titties of solar power
We need the huge, voluptuous titties of Nuclear Power.

No, people will bitch, moan and riot about the price and supply of oil based goods, even if a lot of people do switch over to electric cars and renewable energy, plastics are going to get expensive.
we're running out of oil which is used to make everything plastic and for fuel and so many other things. Everyone switching to electric cars isn't going to prevent a problem with plastic. What we should do is do what every social conservative would despise as a bunch of liberal hippy talk. We need to legalize and have mass production of hemp. It would not only save us quicker than anything from the very recent crisis due to its numerous uses, being what was used for paper, rope, and even fuel for some prototype cars and having the possibility to be made into plastic, but it would also put America on top of the world economy and make it fully independent from foreign oil.
Sadly this will never happen due to the social conservatives and their hatred of anything tree hugging liberals say. Fucking social conservatives give all things conservative a bad name.

if only those two power sources weren't completely mutually exclusive

Yeah, um, lol, no.

Lets just go nuclear. It's the best system we have right now. We have a pretty good method of disposing it, transporting it, things are so much safer than they were when the accidents happened.

you do realize that industrial grade hemp is the most useful plant on earth? And you can't even smoke it. Over 27,000 products were estimated to be made with it in 1950's in the 10 years it was legalized for. It's better than any other textile fibre we use right now. It's oils are also of incredible value.
It wouldn't save us, but it would create an incredible crop to produce a lot of things cheaply with.

We can already make plastic out of plant hydrocarbons, and this plastic has the benefit of breaking down much faster. We can make fuel this way too.
Let's stop using oil for everything, it's dirty and stupid

Does hemp have another advantage of being able to grow in shitty soil where food won't?

Which was my point.
[editline]10th February 2011[/editline]
And obviously not that cheaply with, otherwise it would have overtaken oil.
Whatever happened to those bioengineered cells which could excrete oil?
We need the huge, voluptuous titties of Nuclear Power.
Absolutely this!
Whatever happened to those bioengineered cells which could excrete oil?
Pretty sure that was a hoax.

If you can't smoke it and it's super useful, why is it illegal?
If you can't smoke it and it's super useful, why is it illegal?
Because you can grow enough for it to refine and then smoke it.
Which is why it's generally licensed.

Hemp industry doesn't have lobbyists.
Hemp industry doesn't have lobbyists.
And then there's always the smear campaign with people who don't know what they're talking about. Kind of like with nuclear power.
Does hemp have another advantage of being able to grow in shitty soil where food won't?
Hemp is one of the hardiest plants there is; It's frost, drought and pest resistant.
It didn't get the name weed for no reason.
Although markedly better than corn, it still has a shitty oil yield compared to other fuel crops.
Which was my point.

I don't think you understand just how little of a free market we actually have. Large industries have massive lobbies and they basically make sure politicians make sure that nothing can interfere with their business or make sure they get first dibs. Most people don't understand how protectionist and corrupt our government has become, not that other governments are any better. If we really did have a free market everyone would be using hemp for just about everything by now.
