I don't see the great thing about electric cars.
I mean, you're still using electricity from power stations, none of which are all that environmentally friendly
Still a vast improvement over fossil fuels, if I recall correctly.
Besides, electricity production is becoming more environmentally friendly. For example, an increasingly large portion of electricity here in Denmark is produced by windmills.
I love all the tech and the idea of driving an electric car.. but this car looks generic and boring. But I guess that's what they're going for.
It pretty much say's why in the first line.
I love all the tech and the idea of driving an electric car.. but this car looks generic and boring. But I guess that's what they're going for.
Atleast it looks like a car and not some weird french designer's dream car.
A bunch of journalists have been test driving it as well, the first impressions are overwhelmingly positive.
A bunch of test drive videos on Youtube if anyone are interested.
Here's a couple "reviews" as well (just limited test drives):

an electric car that doesnt look like a bubble
will be sold out within 15 minutes. calling it now
an electric car that doesnt look like a bubble

It's been sold out for quite a while already.
I'm pretty sure that if you ordered now, you wouldn't get your car any time soon. I think the earliest they guarantee now is May or something.
I love all the tech and the idea of driving an electric car.. but this car looks generic and boring. But I guess that's what they're going for.
Better to have a generic look that can get sales than a horrible look that wont.
It's not that bad either, the front reminds me of a DB9.

Considering most electric car designers feel the need to make them look like shit for some reason, I'd say this car looks great. Compared to other cars, it is pretty generic, but I still like it.

looks like the golf cart of the ~future~
My father emailed me and told me he's going to lease one. Can't wait to drive it with him.
has a range of 300 miles at that speed with the manufacturer's largest, 85-kilowatt-hour battery.
I'll believe it when I see it. Manufacturer's claims are nice and all but so far no EV has ever done more than 60-65% of it's claimed range in normal driving. Real-world things like stop lights, air conditioning and speed limits higher than 55MPH tend to stunt the range pretty severely.
Still more range than any other EV though. But the "Spam cells at it until it makes 300 miles" approach isn't going to make for a nimble car.
I will say they made the first EV that doesn't look like a yuppiemobile squashed a soda can. It's actually a pretty car. Looks better than 95% of what's on the road. I'd buy one if it had a gasoline engine --> manual trans --> RWD version available.
It's a beautiful car. I'm glad they didn't future it up. It looks classy and sleek.
American made ffffffuck yeah. I think I know exactly what Musk is doing with all of this, his plan is actually quite ingenious. He has his company build high-end, expensive electric cars that only the rich can afford. By having an exclusive car, he can, in the long term, create a less-expensive and overall more efficient version by using the capital gained from the expensive sports cars and the technology that evolves with every version of them. Think about it. The original Roadster started at 90k and had a range of 300 miles, but took a day to charge. Now, the highest model of the S costs 90k, with its max charge time being roughly 8 hours. He's inching the company towards the most efficient and economical vehicle on the market. I'm calling it now, when Tesla comes out with a 30k model, it will beat the pants off any other car and sweep the market.
Basically what happened with the Model T, only the rich got it, eventually price went down and everyone had one.

Looking at these images of electric cars I remembered something.
As a child we had to design a future car because why the hell not.
As I lacked imagination back then, I just drew an egg with wheels and a windshield.
Man, they stole my design! I could've got millions from it!
I can't believe someone made an electric car that actually looks decent...
Basically what happened with the Model T, only the rich got it, eventually price went down and everyone had one.
That's the plan. Why do you think all the cars are named the Model *letter here*? Tesla specifically did that to give homage to the Model T.
When Elon made his riches in the dotcom boom of the 90s, he asked himself how he was going to change the world with his money rather than squat on it like the average rich person. He decided he wanted to make things cheap and affordable for the masses. Specifically space flight and energy.
Now he owns SpaceX, Tesla Motors, and is co founder of Solar City. All of which are based in the US, and strive to make their products cheap and affordable.
Tesla would've died years ago if he didn't invest one hundred million dollars of his own wealth into the company. He nearly went bankrupt.
He's pretty much awesome.

The EPA tested it and so far it's getting about 265 miles out of it.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its ratings for the high-end 85 kWh Model S, giving the electric sedan a mile per gallon equivalent (MPGe) rating of 89 combined, or 88 city and 90 highway.
Also, the Model S underwent the EPA's new five-cycle testing procedure scoring a 265-mile range. The vehicle also landed a 300-mile range using the EPA's traditional two-cycle testing. This puts the Model S far ahead of the electric competition.
I think it looks nice.
I can't wait for the third generation Tesla, it should really shake things up.
I'll wait for top gear to review it
This actually looks very attractive and I normally hate newer sedan type vehicles. If I had to get a sedan I'd go for one of these, purely for looks.
I'll wait for top gear to review it
I wonder if Top Gear will even touch it after what happened last time.
http://techcrunch.com/2011/03/30/tesla-vs-top-gear/
Who watches Top Gear for serious reviews anyways.
Top Gear is funny, that's what it's supposed to be, when I watch it I expect fun, not actual proper car reviews.
I just realized, since the engine is in the back, and the front is actually more cargo space, that grille is purely aesthetic. A staple of design, steaming from the need for combustion engines to need fresh air. Something this car does not necessarily need.

Damn look at those headrests,
I like it.

The grille is mostly covered anyways.
Elon should put one into orbit atop a Falcon 9 along with a solar array just because he can. Would be one hell of a viral marketing show. "My car can run in space, can yours? Didn't think so."
Or put the SUV one on the moon that you can drive online. Would technically still work if it didn't freeze over or die from the radiation.
I'm just bullshitting, here.

I don't think it would like the temperatures it would experience in space.
The grille is mostly covered anyways.
I just find it interesting that engine itself has become such a staple of design. Same with the head and tail lamps. Long ago they were actually gas powered lamps hanging off the front of the carriage. Someone should make an animation of the evolution of the automobile that starts with "horseless wagons" and ends with whatever the newest car is at the time. Would be cool to see.
I would do anyyyyyyything for this car. i mean anything
I saw this at NYIAS and it's a nice looking car.
