Looking at the lifetime of the Dreamcast is depressing. For the first few months it sold really well, better than a console coming off the Saturn had any right to do, it had good games, and was the most powerful machine of its generation for a while. And then a few months into its promising life the PS2 came along and smothered it to death.
In a world where Sony didn't decide to make their own console, the Dreamcast probably would have won that generation. I never owned a Dreamcast but I've always wanted one, and some day I'll buy one and love it along with my Megadrive.
It's hard to say if it would've won if not for the PS2, as it still would've had all the graphics-hype of the Gamecube and X-Box to compete against. Its main selling point then would've been the price, as it was the cheapest console of that generation IIRC.
But man, I loved that little machine. The disc-reading mechanism was a tad loud, but I have so many fond memories of Soul Caliber and Vigilante: 2nd Offense on that thing. Good thing I still have two of them. :v:
One of the only consoles I never owned, still seems mysterious to me
Went from N64 - PS2

Sega sports Dreamcast best Dreamcast
if you removed the sega sport logo then yes, it kinda was, if you like black consoles
Never owned a DC, I was a Sony kid around the time. I still give it props for being a little kick ass gaming console though.
- First Console to have a modem built in right out of the box
- The Huge fucking Sale Bonanza it had right off the get go
- Specialized Discs that held 25% more data then the PS2
- Windows CE / DirectX Always was up to date since it was all on the disc
- A Half Life port that would of had better graphics then the PC version

A friend of mine has that game. Looked pretty cool.
I still have one of these, fully functioning, with several games for it.
I bought one for $50 with Sword of the Berserker and Sonic Adventure. Still works. Haven't beat those game though.
I still have mine, it has the best version of Soul Reaver on it.
Plus I just love the style of it.

Actually, the PS2 used DVDs, while Dreamcast used a special CD-ROM with increased capacity. :eng101:
