If reddit's a shithole of the internet facepunch is a pimple right next to it.
We're not that bad. More like the interesting but unattractive mole on your ear, looking down upon the rest of the internet body.
Even if you disagree with someone you can still have a good discussion. Shitfest threads get locked because they always end up being a pissing contest of "I'm right you're wrong fuck off". Mass Debate was added for this exact reason but nobody uses it because having to back up your arguments takes more effort than calling someone a fag and rating them dumb.
I'm not saying your points are wrong here, but this rarely ever happens on FP outside of Mass Debate simply because FP has a lot of members that only wants to provoke a shitfest instead of actually contributing to the discussion, as demostrated by this guy:
And take a wild guess as to what's gonna happen. All because of you. Congratulations.
A lot of you have made great points in this thread, but posts like that and the typical "im always right and anyone who disagrees with me are fucking idiots" posters that just drives the thread to the ground even though there are legitimate debating going on.
wasnt reddit originally all about free speech lol
Reddit is a federalist system. Admins rarely censor anything, but mods are free to do whatever they want in their subreddits, and if you have a problem with censorship in a subreddit, you're always free to create your own. So technically, Reddit itself doesn't limit free speech (unless you count the /r/jailbait fiasco).
4chan is shit reddit is shit fp is shit all forums are shit
4chan is shit reddit is shit fp is shit all forums are shit
we can usually survive the fumes from our forum shit because of our gasmasks tho
I'm looking at the atheism reddit and I'm not seeing what's supposedly to outrageous about it. It seems to me that the bad reputation is more of a meme than an accurate representation of that website.
I'm not seeing any of this but I'm only on the first page. Looks like sensationalism to me.
Unless /r/atheism has improved massively over the last couple years, then that video is/was pretty accurate. Pretty much all of the default subreddits are terrible though.
Didn't the /r/atheism mods have a crackdown a few months back, which caused all the shitposters to make a new subreddit?
and the oify is literally shit
wow
The key feature about reddit is being able to choose what stays in the frontpage and what doesn't. If it's a bad thread, people will downvote it and move on. So any kind of 'preemptive moderation' is silly.
This doesn't work when any asshole can vote on shit and their algorithm for it is flawed. there's two ways a subreddit can be good: niche and small (universities, specific pieces of technology, specific games) and heavily moderated (most of the big science subreddits) I don't know if the r/tech mods are doing this because of that, but it would probably improve the quality of the subreddit. Get it back to "general tech news" instead of 20 articles and opinion pieces with clickbait titles about whatever's hot this week. [editline]15th April 2014[/editline]
I'm not seeing any of this but I'm only on the first page. Looks like sensationalism to me.
they banned memes a while ago, that was a fun week
They are doing this for a good reason though. For most of the times, threads posted with these keywords in the titles are usually articles that are extremely low in quality and are heavily sensationalized/editorial, serving nothing more as a room for circlejerking. They're only doing it to weed out the shitposts from the sub, which is a reasonable thing to do.
That's why I would be with the mods. Reddit is a haven for circlejerking, and words like NSA and Bitcoins are what "President" Obongo and Muslims are to Fox News viewers.
Reddit is a massive hugbox circlejerk where anyone who dares to commit the crime of disagreeing with the majority gets downboated to oblivion and their posts hidden. The mods take that ideology to the extreme by turning threads into barren graveyards of deleted posts just because they don't like them. Even if you find some obscure subreddit that isn't completely awful the hugbox circlejerk thing is always present at some level because the whole site is designed around it.
There is a "Reddit singularity" when a subreddit gets too many viewers and then becomes shit from meme replies and zero-effort posts. The general rule of thumb: the smaller it is, the better.
I can literally take this exact post and change every "reddit" to "facepunch" and your claim would still hold, if not better. From my observations of both Reddit and FP, reddit in general is a much tolerant place for controversal opinions as long as you have good reasons backing it up and isn't being retarded about it (assuming you're not posting it in a very obvious circlejerking sub like r/atheism). This certainly isn't the case with Facepunch at all.
Posts that disagree with the Reddit hivemind get downvoted and eventually hidden unless you click on it. So dumb meme replies and hivemind-approved comments remain on the top. If you don't believe me, say something good about Republicans on r/politics, and then watch them boast about how they got banned from r/republicans for being a dickhead before your post is hidden from downvotes.
sh (any thread about atheism, feminism, guns), ft (LAMO PICKS!!), gd (lol no one posts there), and the oify is literally shit actually, pretty much everything in sh is shit, barely anyone here actually reads more than a word of the article (or none if you don't include the thread title), not to mention the constant stream of shitposters we're getting recently (be, silence i kill you, that nazi guy who i forget, etc)
and that can easily be compared to frontpage default subs, aka the shit you should get the hell away from on reddit. then you've got literally every other section which is a smaller community of people who mostly know what they're talking about (music forum, art forum, H&S, the mega threads in games forum) and you can easily compare them to, say, /r/aoe2/ or /r/photography/ (but in a smaller scale)
