People tend to associate emo with suicidal, depressing thoughts.
That's not emo. That's something that you can find in every social scene imaginable. It's just more apparent in emo because, well, emo's mostly about feelings and emotions. So it's clearer for an outsider to see all the negative feelings involved, while all the other emos that don't suffer from depression or bipolar or what have you are ultimately ignored.
Classic emo culture is extremely uplifting, and while it does involve dark themes and moods, its main focus is typically on being or becoming happy in spite of negativity.
