Seeing people fight for their freedom and their rights returned a glimmer of hope in humanity to me.

WW3 seems unlikely more like a global civil war.

You think that would somehow be a good time?
My political studies professor was talking about how the Egyptian army is helping the protesters right now. Which is odd because they should be sided with the police.
Children of the revolution is a more appropriate song than these dumb tracks.
Anyways, best of luck to the people involved.

Some parts of the military have not agreed with Mubarak's decision to have his son succeed him as president. Though they're probably in the minority- there are still many elements of the army that will follow the government- last I read a military force is being sent to quell unrest in Suez since the police have been insufficient.
Although Egypt is facing lots of issues, its government isn't [as] corrupt [as Tunisia's].
Mubarak's Egypt is essentially the grand-daddy of corruption. Mind you while they don't have large petrol resources they do have heavy industry and the like. Unfortunately the country's growth has been pretty much stagnant since Mubarak took control back in 1981.
It is also worth noting that Mubarak took control during a state of emergency in 1981 following the assassination of Anwar Sadat. This state of emergency hasn't been lifted since either. If Mubarak sticks around until october of this year, it means the state of emergency has been in place for 30 damn years.
Social services are even worse, and the government doesn't do most of what it should do beyond protecting the interests of its brass, industrial partners, and interests of foreign powers. FYI Egypt despite its industrial base, has a literacy rate of 66 or 67%. I believe in the Middle-East many migrant workers are Egyptians. What should be a strong Arab state is essentially being held down by a corrupt regime.
One thing I've found interesting about this though is that like in Tunisia it is coming from the masses. The spectre of Islamic radicalism the regime presents in the from of the Muslim Brotherhood has been quiet. Hell they seemed dumbfounded in their initial statements.
Though considering the importance of Egypt in certain nation's securities (Israel) and other's regional policies (United States), it would require an extended and violent upheaval to remove someone as entrenched as Mubarak. There are outside forces who do not want to see a regime change at this juncture (ie United States) because of the implications it could have for other Arab states.

I'd be pissed off if I lived in Egypt, too
that was a really gripping tune, would listen again.
It was used by the Red Party during the Russian Revolution as the song dedicating the revolution, so I thought it'd be fitting.

I'd like to point out that those credit default swap numbers don't mean squat about the shape Egypt's economy is in. Shitty CDS numbers are caused by the instability we're seeing, not--as the OP suggests--the other way around.
Basically those numbers are predicated on the likelihood of the shit hitting the fan. So on the one hand this says something about the market's faith in Egypt's government, on the other hand economic conditions are not contributing to this uprising.
I was expecting badage from the thread title.
Yeah, my thread has a confusing name, I wasn't really aware that this hasn't been all over the western media yet and thought I'd give FP a glimpse of what's really going on from an Egyptian who's also a FP member.
My DSL connection is also crawling at dialup speeds due to network problems and me using Tor over the lot of it, sometimes it's hard to update/keep up with the thread and what's actually going on, sorry guys.
*double post due to connection errors mentioned in previous post*

The president, I mean dictator since 1981 needs to go. He's nothing but a puppet soaked in corruption.

It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
Best of luck to all our Egyptian Facepunchers, come back in one piece.
