No with IR it was more bump phones together at a specific angle so the ports line up, duct tape them together so they don't lose the connection by moving, and leave them in your pocket for half an hour to send a picture across
Like what the game Boy had
It was my understanding that the S3's implementation of that bumping things to get stuff feature kinda sucks because it's not as standard as the stock Android Beam, it uses wifi direct instead of NFC or something
The idea behind that being that you can actually shift an entire video in seconds, rather than waiting with bluetooth. I do hope the S3 still comes with beam though.

How does that even work? The video mustn't be really big then

WiFi is can be very fast if you're not limited by the internet speed.

Bluetooth on the other hand, is not.

It uses NFC to pair the devices then uses wifi direct to transfer files. The file transfer isn't taking place as soon as the devices tap but afterwards. Unfortunately you have to stay relatively close in order to finish the download.

It's not standard but the implementation is much faster for large files than the stock android implementation.
Standard NFC can only transfers very small amounts of data (a few KB iirc) and shares big files over bluetooth. Samsungs S Beam uses NFC for setup and actually transfers files over wifi direct so it transfers at much much faster speeds in comparison to bluetooth.
You can't with videos, but the Galaxy S III is introducing a new feature, called ShareShot. Shareshot allows you to make the most of whatever event or meetup you're attending. With ShareShot, you can take a photograph, and with the click of a button, you can share that photo with up to 5 friends with no wifi access needed. The photograph simply downloads to a cloud server which your friends can access IN REAL TIME
