could the oil spill have anything to do with this?
Possibly
No, not the fish!
100 tons of dead fish? Well. That's a lot of fish.
Fish sticks anyone?

The Oil spill caused this.
The Gulf of mexico is a huge ass of water, we don't know what the oil spill caused.
The gulf of mexico is linked to the Mississippi River, Which Starts here and goes to a shitload of places
[img_thumb]http://bacshortly.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/maps.jpg[/img_thumb]
Arkansas and Louisiana Are connected to the Mississippi river.
That could explain the dead birds, they drink from the river and they die.
As for the brazillian fish, the oil could of reached a current and launched it into brazillian waters.
If that's true, then the spill did a lot more damage than I thought it would.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, the Mississippi flows into the Gulf. Nothing could come up it from the oil spill... could it?
If that's true, then the spill did a lot more damage than I thought it would.
But I highly doubt it is because the Mississippi runs INTO the Gulf of Mexico, not from it. It starts in Minnesota and runs south.

i always confused the river i live near (St Johns) for every other river, since it's a rare river that flows north :saddowns:
Though you never could know, nature does weird shit

Correct me if I'm ALSO wrong, but won't a large river like the Mississippi be at the very least semi-tidal?

I'm sure they would have noticed oil at those locations and been quick to make the accusation.
Repost from reddit:
Biologist at the US Dept. of Fish and Wildlife here. The general consensus so far is that the bird deaths are caused by poorly-timed idiots with fireworks (the bird bodies supposedly show injuries commensurate with blasts or impacts but we have yet to perform necropsies here) and that the fish kill is unrelated. Bird kills are not terribly uncommon, let's not forget. (We'll be getting some necropsies done later in the week from the Louisiana kills, I'll post what we find as I consider it a matter of public record.) Personally, I'm not sure about any overarching umbrella cause, but the fish kill in the Chesapeake was temperature shock. Overall, let's examine the link. Birds and Fish are communal animals, often migratory, and have extremely well-tuned energy partitioning mechanisms that are vulnerable to unexpected changes. After a migration, these animals are stressed, weak, and literally almost dead from starvation. Climatic variation can be the difference between life and death. With communal animals, the instinct to stay with the group overrides the need to dash off alone and hunt for food. They suck at prioritizing. They die together over a small space and in a short time. The reason we haven't found migratory bats doing this is simple-they're much better at adapting their behaviors.
TL,DR; Jesus is killing the planet because gays are allowed in the military.

Bahahaha
I don't feel so bad now
Probably doesn't mean anything, but I used to live less than a block from a section of the arkansas river. It literally ran right behind my backyard. I used to walk it once in a while, and it was polluted as hell. There was a broken sewer line (but it looked like it wasn't used, or had been cleaned) and down the river from it, there was floating dark shit everywhere. And in that area, there was nothing. No grass on the banks, no snakes, no fish, just nothing. But everywhere else, there was some form of life.

Michigan's good. We don't want any part of your oil.
Although, we had a tanker sink and spill oil here a few months ago.
