And this is one legitimate use for "assault rifles." Note though, that when it's used for self defence, it's simply "semi-automatic," yet when it's used for a crime, it's suddenly an "assault rifle." The media disgusts me sometimes. Good on him, though, fending the thieves off. If a gun store owner in Canada tried that he'd be arrested.
I feel like most gun threads on Sensationalist Headlines turn into Mass Debate within the first page.
And people wonder why civilians need automatic weapons.
EVERY FUCKING THREAD STOP
Actually civilians with a Class-3 permit can own automatic weapons if they have the proper tax stamp. Basically if the serial number is registered, you have a class-3 permit and the tax stamp, and don't mind randomly being searched to make sure the gun (and its stamp) is still there, you can own an automatic weapon. I'm not entirely certain if this covers such things as Mac10s, Uzis, or automatic Glocks, but I know a guy with a class-3 who has an automatic M16 and (of course) an AK. As you said it's all just for fun and the heavy regulation insures nobody but the biggest idiot in the world would use their automatic gun in a crime. Arguably anybody willing to commit such a crime in the first place is a huge idiot anyway, but that's not the point.
you don't need a class 3 to own an automatic weapon, just one made after 1986. you have to be in law enforcement or the government to get a class 3 though pre-86 automatics don't require any permit but the ban created such an awful artificial supply/demand fuckup that nobody can afford them
Why are you guys mentioning automatic weapons when the gun store owner was using a semi automatic weapon?
I feel like most gun threads on Sensationalist Headlines turn into Mass Debate within the first page.
The funny part is there is no mass debate threads for it :v:
I don't understand why automatics are even banned. sure they're "scary" but they're really not any more effective than semi automatics. automatic fire fits into a really extremely limited role combat-wise and 3 semi-auto AR-15s can easily fill the role that an automatic could fill. literally the only reason a civilian could want one is fun and I don't see any reason for the government to regulate that
Automatic fire is only really useful for suppression, and even then it's only useful in bursts. I've said it before in another thread and I think it's scary to do it. Australians have strict gun laws, I feel safe to walk around the city not fearing my life, not needing a knife or something to help me. Just me and my phone, but I've never been robbed, threatened or stabbed - and it shall remain like that.
The right to bear arms has nothing to do with self defense, hunting, or sport shooting.
Why would you pull into a waffle restaurant for a gunshot wound?
Ever been to a waffle house? It's much worse than being shot.

You do not need a "Class-3 Permit", that's a myth. Post-1986 registered "Machine Guns" can only be possessed by members of LEOs, government entities, and can also be transferred to licensed FFL-holding firearms dealers or manufacturers. Examples possessed by these entities are called "Dealer Samples".

Just because they don't have guns doesn't mean they can't just kill you with something else.
