The Xbox 720's features will be interesting once the console is revealed, but EA says this system needs to be more about its design and what it can offer consumers in addition to gaming.
According to a report from GamesIndustry on Friday, EA executive vice president of digital Kristian Segerstrale said since the next-generation of consoles are still in the development stage, people will not be able to fully see what works and what doesn't for a few years.
"We are at such an early stage of this that some of the things you are seeing now are literally an application of what we know and had before in new and interesting ways.
"I believe personally that the really big shift will come as we shift the mindset of design, such that we design from the ground up for that. One or two years from now is really when you will see the results of what's going on right now," Segerstrale said.
Segerstrale further explained, saying what he believes the next round of consoles will need to offer gamers in the way of services.
"Almost any device comes with a billing mechanism, a connectivity mechanism, a policy on updates, and all those things that makes it more than just a piece of hardware.
"The consumer can't be happy if on your specific hardware updates come out slower, or the experience isn't updated as quickly as on some other platform.
"I think that's where all of us have work to do; we have work to do to learn as a publisher to deal with that environment better and to be faster and to be better across the board.
"Ecosystems also have an evolution to go through. I think most of the time there's a fairly deep understanding that this is going to be looked at moving forward, and I'm really pretty optimistic on that," Segerstrale said.
What do you think is most crucial that next-generation consoles offer gamers?
To answer the author's question at the end, I would want an ease of accessibility. Like a STEAM for consoles. Our network fibers are getting faster by the day ... can't we develop a network to easily purchase massive content online? This will effectively destroy the physical game market, wouldn't it.....
stop calling it the 720
its retarded
but EA says this system needs to be more about its design and what it can offer consumers in addition to gaming.
No it doesn't. It needs to play games, not update your status on Facebook. I get that social media can enhance some games, but it should not be the focus of a console. That is ridiculous.
EA staph wat are you doing
So it'll be a streamlined DLC acquisition machine? That's what their comments seem to be poorly masking.
Xbox 420

xbox 720 smoke weed erryday.
leave the social media shit alone
i have my computer and phone for that shit and they should be more focused on the hardware and not on how to tweet during a MW5 game or something

They said it needs to be, not it will be.
I tried to change the theme on my xbox today and literally couldn't find it in any fucking location.
Turns out it's in the fucking SOCIAL tab, not settings, not apps not any other useless shit area that shouldn't be on the fucking console, no - SOCIAL tab.

Go away EA
No one likes you anymore
why is this a viable business move? i get that the 360 has sort of become a media centre that families can use for everything, which must attract the casual market a bit more, but of everyone i know they've all either stopped playing video games completely or they've all moved over to pc gaming because it turns out it's way cheaper now and they get a much more varied selection of games.
i know that this is just anecdotal but it seems to me that the mature gaming market is dying off completely on the 360. sure they're getting a tonne of money from kids playing cod and families using netflix, but with the adult artistic direction that games are going in you'd think they'd want in on that too
EA have a part of the new xbox
I don't want it anymore
I don't like being referred to as a consumer when it comes to video games.

IMO, an amazing feature for a lot of games would be like how GTA4 on the PC has it
If you ever had a moment where you just went "WOAH, THAT JUST HAPPENED? THAT WAS AMAZING," you can go back and record what just happened, and add the ability post it on YouTube/Facebook.
I wouldn't mind a section of the console menu for social networking, listing your console friends, videos/screenshots they posted, Facebook, Twitter, but just a separate section, like the Friends section of consoles, now.
Hell, I pretty much described the Community section on Steam. Take that, give it Facebook integration, and slap it on a console. Not too bad in my opinion. Just don't make it "premium" only (just follow Sony's plan of a premium account, please, if you insist on premium membership) Just give games the feature from GTA IV I mentioned to make it more accessable.

Yes, I much prefer connoisseur.

well you are one so tough shit I guess
I don't like being referred to as a consumer when it comes to video games.
i dont understand this sort of anti-business approach to video games. yes some companies have a really bad business-to-fan ethic but to act like you're above marketing and consumerism in games is just ridiculous
games are artistic, yes, but they use art as a means to an end; a means to design. designs are made to be sold. you buy the good designs and you enjoy them. you're a consumer of designs

You bought the game. You consumed a product. Therefore, you are a consumer.

Okay, then stop investing in video games. Then you won't be a consumer in the video game market.

I bet you're a cake consumer.
i want the next xbox to be able to play games that have next gen graphics, physics and gameplay. That is most important surely.
I DONT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT FACEBOOK ON MY XBOX, or any sort of social media for that matter. To be honest i'd be equally happy if my xbox didn't even have a dash and just played games for christs sake. That is what it's for after all.
I don't like being referred to as a consumer when it comes to video games.
That's like saying you don't like being referred to as an employee when you're at your job.
Battlefield 4 on the new Xbox will have quick-time events allowing you to share your terrorist killcount on the go.
"PRESS X TO UPVOTE"
I bet the next Xbox is going to have a credit card reader built in.
We're about to hit a very dark age for gaming.
you know i think adult console gamers are dying out
Consoles once again desperately trying to encroach on the user experience of the PC platform. Not going to work Macroshaft.
like others have said,it's all [sp]rooty tooty point n' shooty [/sp] COD kids and families with media centers
NINJA'D
as much as i think what's outlined in this article is going about things the wrong way, i hate all this "omg gaming is going to die. these are dark days. fuck off any kind of connection with video games to the outside world! i just want video games!!!!"
while i think facebook connectivity and some other features are kinda unnecessary, they're really not going to get in your way. social networking in games can be brilliant. i remember watching my brother play the nfs hot pursuit remake that came out a couple of years ago. the social networking kept him hooked on that game way longer than the game itself would have done. every time his score or time or whatever was beaten by a friend he'd be back on there nailing it to the 10th of the second
i hate this archaic notion that games are games and nothing else and any tampering with that is a step in the wrong direction. don't be so resistant to change. the popularisation of games has led to brilliant things
