All I know is that I would much rather walk down a dark alley in Australia than one in America. Its stupid to think that the strict gun laws hasn't had a positive effect in Australia.

Except you are still twice as likely to be the victim of assault in Australia.
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_ass_vic-crime-assault-victims
You are more than twice as likely to be raped.
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap_vic-crime-rape-victims
Or we can go for burglaries. Australia has over twice as many (1500 vs 700).
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_bur-crime-burglaries
Your car is significantly more likely to be stolen.
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_aut_the-crime-auto-theft
You are twice as likely to be the victim of a robbery.
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rob_vic-crime-robbery-victims
And just for the hell of it:
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri_vic-crime-total-victims
Nope. Safer in the United States.

Devils advocate for a moment here:
Crime statistics are often better indicators of prevalence of law enforcement and willingness to report crime, than actual prevalence
This data is useful, but it is reliant upon a couple of assumptions.
Well Gunfox wins. I didn't know that.
I need to save the debating for when I'm on a pc. Doing this from my phone was really hard, takes too long to check your facts.

the difference between these two rifles is an aftermarket stock that doesn't affect functionality. assault weapon bans are bans on appearance, not bans on deadliness.

I chose the stats I did specifically because they translate well.
Since both the US and Australia both have criminal justice systems which recognize the need for accurate reporting (something that the more war-torn nations on the list may not or may not be capable of), the accuracy of the data provided is likely reasonably accurate. The only issues which would arrive would be from unusual or overly specific stats. Something like auto theft or burglary are likely to have nearly identical conditions in both the US and Australia, making the comparison valid.
if they were bans on deadliness, the big bolt-action hunting rifles would be the ones getting banned.

Generally I'd agree with this pretty much to the letter, but it's still never bad to cite potential shortcomings in data. It certainly makes it harder to call you out on details.
Example: I recall there being some issue in Australia with defining tresspassing/or B&E or something like that.

From the study on the last page. It looks like gun related deaths in Australia were already falling when the gun controls were put into place.
Probably due to the shock of the port arthur shooting.
and by the way, Australia has a fairly high gun ownership rate
Got a source for that?

Even more ridiculous is:

The top is legal, the bottom is illegal. They are functionally identical in every way.
The M1A1 is just a Paratrooper version of the M1, with a folding stock, and pistol grip.
Got a source for that?
According to Wikipedia, Australia has 15 guns per 100 residents, putting it in the same territory as countries like the Czech Republic who have lax gun control, and in the top 50 most armed nations in the world.
Wikipedia is wrong. There is no way that many own guns.
i find it funny that in many threads(especially this one), anti-gun crusaders(some do give good points, but not the ones i'm referring to) like to utilize pathos to try to win their arguments rather than logic.

SSAA has a more conservative estimate at 11%, but these are 2001 numbers. There are plenty of Australian gun owners in Facepunch's Firearms thread if you want to go ask them about it.
I have known of ~3 people that own guns must be certain areas because that's really surprising.
I have known of ~3 people that own guns must be certain areas because that's really surprising.
Most gun owners don't go around wearing GLOCK PERFECTION shirts, just in case you weren't aware. Start asking people, you might be surprised.

I may be 7 pages late, but I don't like guns because they're made to kill people, not because of some random vain chick on the internet.

Guns as a whole exist to kill people. Drills exist to put holes in inanimate objects.

Now take that drill, and improvise it. Shove it into someones windpipe and drill.
The drill has now been used to kill.
You see how this works? Anything can be used to kill. Humans have this very keen ability to make otherwise sensible, and peaceful things into weapons purely designed to beat the shit out of one another.

You going soft on me boy
Before people start talking about Australia and guns, read this.
I can't comment on the comparisons between obtaining a firearm in the USA and Australia though because I'm Australian and therefore I don't know shit about the actual process (all that I know is that it differs between states).
I was born and raised in Texas. As many of you know, Texas is a complete gun friendly state. My Dad has taken me to his friends ranch several times to shoot skeet. the first thing I ever learned before being handed a gun was gun handling ethics:
1. Before handing over a gun, make sure that it is unloaded or the safety is on
2. When handed a gun, make sure it is unloaded or the safety is on
3. Never aim a gun directly at anyone, even if it is unloaded or if the safety is on
4. Always keep the safety on, even if it is unloaded or put away.
5. A gun is a weapon, not a toy. If you respect your life, then you should respect your weapon, and be careful with them
In short, guns do not kill people. Retarded people with guns, kill people
In Australia, all guns are illegial, so could someone explain to me the logical reasons of owning an assault rifle? Because frankly, I don't see the point.
If you reallllly wanted defense wouldn't you buy a pistol? Why would you need a gun that shoots 40 bullets in one mag...
If you're worried about how excellent they are for killing... Let's think for a minute. Wouldn't the things that supposedly make them excellent at killing (223 calibre, high cap magazine, short overall length) be the thing that also makes them really good for self defence?
Also, AR-15 variants are really good for hog hunting. They're nuisance animals and you can take what you like when you like, and you hunt them on the ground. You kinda want a high cap magazine just in case the rare situation occurs and you get rushed by a few hogs. They generally won't fuck with you alone, but get a few of them together and see if they don't think they have a chance. Especially sows.
Not even one post in and someone is talking out of their ass about a hobby they don't understand. First off, not all guns in Australia are illegal. Many are banned, but it's not impossible to legally own a firearm there. Second off, you can't just walk into a walmart and buy an assault rifle. To do that you'd have to get a class 3 permit, which takes tons of cash and paperwork through the ATF to get one, even then fully automatic weapons in the US (legal ones at least) cost 10's of thousands of dollars, it's not easy to get one. AR-15's and AK are not assault rifles, they're just rifles chambered in an intermediate caliber.
Owning a firearm isn't just about home defense or hunting. Target shooting and collecting are 2 very common hobbies in the US. Target shooting with an AR-15 or an AK rifle is a very fun and inexpensive hobby, and it's also a safe one if you practice proper safety.
Actually you can walk into Walmart and buy a Bushmaster AR-15
And full auto M16s cost like 8k on the low end.
[editline]27th December 2012[/editline]
You cant even hunt with an ar-15 here in georgia. Its considered inhumane because it is such a small caliber that it takes 2-3 shots to kill a deer most of the time.
Why are people rating this dumb? It's true.

And you need a 250 dollar destructive devices stamp.
Also, who uses those to hunt deer? I wouldn't.
Hogs, on the other hand, are below contempt. I've heard of people hunting them with chains (to break their backs) and then just letting them sit their stuggling to get away while suffering from lower paralysis. After they're done doing that, they then kill them.
In Virginia, I believe we're allowed to own fully automatic weapons. I'm not to sure just yet.
If we are, I'm probably going to try and buy a Galil when I get home tomorrow.
