Irreversible brain damage doesn't really start happening before 4-5 minutes or something. If you start performing effective CPR to get blood flowing and someone providing oxygen you are giving the guy pretty good chances. I'm not too well knowledged with how exactly you unfuck a heart attack situation, but since if I remember correctly, it's caused by heart muscles not getting enough oxygen and limiting the heart's ability to pump blood, I don't think defibrillation would do too much compared to cardiac arrest which involves fibrillation. But the point is, if your heart is fucking up, CPR is an absolute must if you want even the slightest chance of surviving. The guy's chances were pretty slim though, considering he was on a plane.
My point is even from the wife's own words it sounds like he was dead and gone and she knew it. "Too late" to use razors or scissors, that might only take seconds? CPR has limited uses, it does not revive people. Those defib machines also have limited use, they are not appropriate in every situation. Until someone offers evidence to the contrary, I'll believe the crew before I believe the wife. The wife is understandably upset at losing her husband so naturally her response is to do everything you can, but 'everything you can' may in fact have been pointless in this case.
Believe it or not, you have to be literally retarded to not know how to use a defib. Most of them I've used tell you everything you have to do out loud. "Removing clothing from patient. Apply pads to patient. Shock advised." It won't let you shock unless the rhythm is right.
