Microsoft is tackling the Windows piracy problem by offering free upgrades to Windows 10 to non-genu

grumble grumble. I'd be happier if I could upgrade an old edition of vista I have floating on a dvd somewhere.
Out of curiosity, does it have anything to do with why you're posting from a Wii or Wii U at the moment, or that just because you're chilling on a couch or something?
It's pretty obvious that he pirated it. And he's probably just changing his user agent.
Pirated old Windows = no Windows store transactions for MS
Legitimate new Windows = Windows store transactions for MS
Simple as that really. They've realised they won't make money off trying to sell pirates the OS, so they're going to sell them apps instead. No need for the tinfoil hats.
Once upon a time Netscape owned the browser market. MS was caught unprepared for the popularity and importance of the internet. Why not? Their entire business model was centered around individual computers loaded with MS software. So they had no internet browser presence.
How'd they fix the problem? How did they take the browser market from Netscape? Giving their browser away for free.
Now mobile devices have eaten into the desktop and laptop customer base. MS essentially has no presence in the mobile market. Windows is becoming an after thought in a lot of people's lives. One way to fix that is to give the OS away for free. People like getting things for free. Ms sells a lot more products and services than Windows, so it's not like this is going to hurt their profits.
It's nice, and its not like i'll keep half of what MS loads onto Windows 10 anyway, app store, default media player, or whatever it'll be replaced.

i don't have access to a pc at home atm so all of my internet browsing gets done on my wii u. good enough for twitter and forums, and i can youtube from the official app which i never have to close because you can open the browser while an app is suspended. works surprisingly well and it might even be a challenge to adjust back once i get to a proper pc again
I think what Microsoft is trying to do is fix up their reputation.
They have a ton of money, they can last, but they need a boost to public image.
noice i will be the only guy in muh city with original windosw
