Why would it go to his kids at all? His wife would have been the next person in line even without a will. Really it's just him sending a message to his wife and making sure the kids don't become spoiled.
The thing is, that's something he could have discussed with his wife, how to raise the kids. If he had bothered to straighten up himself, that's also something he could have prevented(them being spoiled) himself. Why put it in a will? Cause he's kidding himself that it's that simple, just put something in your will and it will all turn out the way you dictate. He was not trying to do right by his kids, he was just being pretentious.

I'm currently enrolled at University and intend to get a job afterwards. You can bet your ass if I suddenly had Hoffman's fortune I'd be dropping out and be doing what I want with my life. Giving money to the wife gives her more control over it than if it were in a trust fund. If the wife does decide to give some money to her kids that is her choice. The last thing this family needs is arguments about money.
