I'm going into first year engineering in less than a month and I really hope the students don't live up to the reputation because if they do, it'll push me out too. Sexists are insufferable. Here's hoping the "As an engineer... [shitpost]" types are loud minorities.
Going through my degrees (Mathematics and Physics dual major), most of my classes for my associates where Engineering-based, and such, a lot of the guys in my classes were more of the nerdy type as well as being vastly outnumbering to the women (in all three Calc classes, I never had a single girl in any of them, though I had more in my Linear and Math Structures than I did in any of the engineering programs). As such, most of the guys were pretty much non-sexist, and really polite to the girls.

Not because they've taken any of those classes, because 'I'm an Engineer, I know what I'm talking about'.

Of course just looking at the different responses, you can see how it varies significantly between classes and generalising it as one thing or another doesn't do it justice. Even if you have friends outside of your course, you should be able to find someone to get along with.
They all drop after the first round of classes, it's just the first semester and some of the second
Actually, the dude-bro thing follows those engineers and if anyone survives more its the dude-bros. The ones that tend to drop out are the middle of the two. The introvert with friends.

There were a lot of dude-bros when I was in college, but the vast majority did drop out of engineering after the first few semesters. Also, I found the nerdy introvert types, while worse because they are more uncomfortable around girls, tend to care more about not making women feel uncomfortable, while the dude-bros were just obnoxious and didn't care. But every school is different......
Most engineers are heavy drinkers, and like to play video games. That about sums it up
Rated funny because holy shit is this true. My flatmate is an engineer, washes whiskey down with whiskey and we play Dota2 pretty much every time we're both home. Also, every one of his engie friends are identical, with the odd variation being Dota2/LoL. The stereotypical engineer nowadays (at least here in Estonia) is a hairy metalhead who drinks and plays heavily. I swear they all look and talk the same.
It probably doesn't help that almost every engineering/computer science class at university is 100% male.
Computer science has a huge problem, mechanical engineering is probably next, I'm in chemical and there's actually a fair amount of women in this field because it feeds into biology, medicine and management positions, civil engineering also has a lot of women
A better title for the article probably would have been "Many People Leave Engineering For A Variety Of Reasons Mostly Due To Misunderstanding The Profession, A Couple Of Them Blame The Work Culture" But I guess that's not as sensational [editline]12th August 2014[/editline] And it's probably too long to fit in the thread title

It maybe sensational but its extremely tame compared to the 24 news cycle channels.

Do people believe that we engineers sit around scheming about how to keep girls out of our profession? My college class was 10% girls, you could literally count them all on your hands. We would kill for there to be more girls here, and quite frankly, in my experience I believe it's a lot easier for girls to progress in the field. When you're a recruiter and you've been talking to 100 practically identical tall skinny guys, it's a nice change of pace when a girl comes around. I don't know if there's been any studies on it, but I wouldn't be surprised if a guy and a girl came up to a recruiter with the same qualifications and personality, the girl would be hired 99 times out of 100. And I say that as someone who's both looked for a job in the past, and been in charge of hiring people.

When I studied the field of electrical engineering, we had 3 girls out of 200 people at the start of the first semester. At the end there were 2 girls and 87 guys finishing up their degree. I worked together with one of them on a few practical projects and on some self organized homework as exercises for the semesters exams and it was all on a professional level. There were no dramas, conflicts or any kinds of discrimination between the sexes - it was all matter of sitting in the same boat. That's why I am pretty genderblind so I don't care if more or even less women engage this field of study. If you know about the difficulties or you are simply not interested in that stuff then why force yourself to something that you don't want? I studied in germany so I don't know the situation in the USA. We had few dudebros which dropped out of class, but strangely we had no stereotypical nerds. Maybe germans are too efficient to be introverted shut in nerds - you can't solve problems working in teams consisting of these kinds of people.

The problem is there aren't enough women going into engineering degrees and if you want to increase the number you need to start in early highschool encouraging women to become interested in technical fields rather than Home Ec or something equally lame.
Most engineers are heavy drinkers, and like to play video games. That about sums it up
I'll fit in just fine then. I had to write a math placement test for one of the courses I'm registered in. The engineering-related math courses aren't the only ones that require the test but of the 30ish people there I'd say about 9 were women. Not the greatest ratio but better than I expected, honestly. I was probably the second oldest person there though, which made me a tad uncomfortable. I think the invigilator was younger than I was. It's definitely something I see a lot of people alluding to on reddit, facepunch is definitely better in that regard.
There's no such a thing as a free ride in your career. Getting your dream job requires effort. If someone gives up on their career because of reasons like coworkers talking about subjects they're not interested in, then I guess that means you were not really interested in that job in the first place.

My sister felt like quitting her Engineering PhD - she said the culture there was awful and toxic.
My sister felt like quitting her Engineering PhD - she said the culture there was awful and toxic.
How so? (genuinely interested in why she considered it awful and toxic)

i misread the title as Manly Women Leave Engineering
Said the staff were great, it was just all the stereotypical neckbeards that populated the course.
I bear them daily. Theres one we call the B.O.T (Big orange twat) He's big and wears this big bright orange rain coat all the time. I had engineering maths in this rather flat lecture theatre once and it was quite empty when I arrived with lots of empty rows. So I sat down surrounded by again lots of empty seats, and the B.O.T comes in and plants his colossal ass right in front of me.
