was it always certain that Chris Benoit's brain damage came entirely from the wrestling? i mean obviously it would have been the big leading cause, but by the end it was so extreme that it leads me to think he either got ridiculously messed up or it was a culmination of different things that were exacerbated by his job.

They fake many of the injuries and are actors, but a lot of those hits are real.
I've always figured that the "fake" part of wrestling was choreographing the fights/deciding the outcome before the match, and "selling it". Most of the shit they do is crazy and would leave you fucked up if you didn't expect it, train for it, or weren't a 300-pound mass of muscle.
