Man sentenced to life in prison for...smoking weed.

When ever I read or hear anything about the legal or justice system in the US I just cant help but think how dumb it is.
It seems to be based entirely around the idea that locking someone up for a ridiculous amount of time is better than actually solving the problem.

What problem?
What problem?
By "problem" I meant what ever reason they had been arrested for. Obviously in some cases the "problem" is solved by locking people up for a long time.
But IMO there are a lot of offences that receive ridiculous sentences in the US where in other parts of the world other ways of dealing with them would be used.
That picture is pretty accurate of the average drug user like myself
Take away however the colourful mushrooms and put the smoking dude in a dark room with a monitor where he will not leave for the next 3 hours.
Take that back buddy, I'm going for a walk to smoke
He broke the law regardless, that means that he will be punished.
Alright, I say that apples are now illegal. Do you think that people should be arrested for selling apples?

What "problem"?
three strikes law lol
another brilliant idea from conservatives
Misleading topic title. He was arrested for selling weed ("distributing"), not smoking it.
Still BS though.
intent to sell is just when you have more than 3 grams or something, my friends brother told me that
Watch and learn.

Coffe is more lethal than marijuana.

Find other parts by yourself.
I was in Covington/Slidell a few weeks ago.
That's insane.
Wait I thought the three strikes law only works when your previous convictions were violent/serious crimes.
Well shit, I don't understand why anyone with three strikes already wouldn't just leave the country. Move to Canada or something, dealing with the hell of immigration and taking a break from drug dealing for a year or so would be a lot better than dealing with the hell of prison for the rest of your life.
wow
some VIOLENT OFFENDERS get less harsh sentences than this
Alright, I say that apples are now illegal. Do you think that people should be arrested for selling apples?
Yes.
I'm against the law, sure, but while one must fight laws like that, in fact it is our duty, it is the law's duty to enforce laws.
If you break the law, you get arrested, no matter how bullshit.
The jury must have been a bunch of soccer moms.
I'm not pro-drugs, but a life sentence is a bit too much for this. So many people that do way worse shit and get 10 years.
He did it multiple times. He was on probation twice, and then was caught, while under probation, with two pounds of weed to sell or whatever.
So technically, it's less the specific crime and more the buildup.
[editline]9th May 2011[/editline]
Also, why wouldn't you be pro drugs?
The jury must have been a bunch of soccer moms.
It was the judge who did the bullshit sentencing. The jury was half decent about it all.
Well it means our system is fucked up and oppressive, but yeah it doesn't mean we're Hitler.
This is new?:v:
lol three strikes law
I remember arguing this in another thread about how fucking stupid the system was, people didn't really listen though.
I feel no sympathy for this dumbshit.
"Intent to sell" is the the stupidest fucking charge ever made, how the fuck can you possibly know someone elses intentions?
If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.
It's not like he doesn't deserve this. He knew the consequences, yet he still broke the law.
Don't go there; never, ever go there. He committed a crime either way.
I bolded "harmless" because it sounded like he had the intention to start a flamewar.
Please show me a single case of someone dying from weed, and weed alone, I can show you millions for tobacco and alcohol.
"Intent to sell" is the the stupidest fucking charge ever made, how the fuck can you possibly know someone elses intentions?
a. Intent to Sell is based on amounts possessed generally. There's no reason for an average pot smoker to have 2 pounds of weed.
b. Sale of drugs is not something that one can really catch. Maybe a STING operation can do it, but still. It's the closest they can get.
c. If there is no way to know intentions, all homicide must be considered involuntary manslaughter, even straight up murders, if they don't admit to it. Because you can't prove they necessarily intended to do it.
I feel no sympathy for this dumbshit.
yeah what a terrible guy.. smoking weed and selling it
a life sentence is too lenient. let's torture him as well.
I don't want to live in this nation any more.
Moving to Canada, brb.

I think he meant he feels no sympathy for the guy because he was dumb enough to get caught, three times.
I hope he has fun lifetime in prison. Maybe he'll become a major drug dealer in there? :v:

some generic smokers don't usually have 3 pounds of weed laying in their house.
Life sentence for a substance that was ravaged by the Reefer Madness movie and Harry Anslinger. Honestly, I don't think that cannabis should be legalized, but maybe decriminalized. So instead of rotting in prison for using a recreational drug, you just get a ticket.
It would really free up space in prisons for people who actually are murderers and rapists.
"What are you in for?"
"Smoking weed and distributing. You?"
"Killed a few people."
"Oh."

That's not the point you ignoramus. The law he was imprisoned for is completely unfounded and unjust. He got a term of imprisonment usually reserved for people who fucking murder children for selling some harmless goddamn Cannabis. He wasn't dealing bricks of fucking coke or getting his kids to make meth, he was selling some dimebags of fucking weed. He has a fucking family and now he's in prison for life, do you have any fucking clue how horriffic our prison systems are? The man might actually fucking die in prison.
This really pisses me off because our countries priorities are fucked. Marijuana is illegal and yet Tobacco companies are free to distribute cancerous deathsticks for however much they want. Fuck it, I'm moving to Canada. Fuck.
