Cruel and unusual for his crime but the Three Strikes rule is one of the few ways we can effectively deter criminals to repeat offences. Each time the punishment goes up until its VERY severe. I agree it needs some tweaking but the concept is good.
Thats.. fucking stupid
The concept is good for crimes that are actually criminal.
If I am reading this right then he was charged with intent to distribute illegal drugs. No matter what people think about Marijuana it is still widely treated as a serious hard drug. I agree that it shouldn't be taken as seriously in some situations and should NOT have earned him the 3rd strike. Things such as this should not be able to be processed through the 3 strikes rule. I can understand if he was the top distributor of cocaine in the region or ran a marijuana distribution ring through the whole US and Americas but something as minimal as maybe giving it to a few friends isn't serious enough to earn him Life.
In Ireland a life time is 20 years in prison, and if you get two life sentences you server the 40 years at the same time, so it's still 20 years in prison, and you'll get out of jail sooner than 20 years because of good behaviour and over crowding in prison. BULLSHIT if you ask me, if you get life you should be in prison for life.
They should have stuck him in solitary for 28 years.
They should have stuck him in solitary for 28 years.
Made him feel the wrath of the anal....penal system
If I am reading this right then he was charged with intent to distribute illegal drugs. No matter what people think about Marijuana it is still widely treated as a serious hard drug.
But that's the problem, because that's not what Marijuana is.
While it is our duty to fight unjust laws, he still broke it, and was caught. He must be punished no matter what.
I disagree. If you believe the law unjust fight it by not convicting him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jury_nullification#21st_century
I disagree. If you believe the law unjust fight it by not convicting him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jury_nullification#21st_century
Exactly. I remember arguing with someone a while ago who said that you can't protest laws by breaking them. I don't really need to point out that it's called "Civil Disobedience" and it's the form of protest Dr. King advocated.
What the hell? Why waste a cell that could hold some dangerous murderer or serial rapist just to get rid of a guy that's doing something that barely harms him, and certainly doesn't harm anyone else?
because he is making un-taxable income
Life sentence for a substance that was ravaged by the Reefer Madness movie and Harry Anslinger. Honestly, I don't think that cannabis should be legalized, but maybe decriminalized. So instead of rotting in prison for using a recreational drug, you just get a ticket. It would really free up space in prisons for people who actually are murderers and rapists. "What are you in for?" "Smoking weed and distributing. You?" "Killed a few people." "Oh."
Reefer Madness was an exploitation film. A joke. It was made to make fun of and exploit the money gained by other, serious films. It's not meant to be truthful at all, and it gets a bad rap.
How the hell is shoving this guy in to the frankly appalling US prison system for thirty years, leaving a kid in a broken home (and more liable to either do fuck all with his life or turn into a criminal) help anyone? Where is the net benefit on spending god knows how much on his court costs and imprisonment, along with any welfare the family he left behind is given, all to stop a few people getting high? I agree that he committed a criminal act, but isn't this a sign that the US Justice system flat out doesn't work - sticking people in a prison with no real focus on rehabilitation doesn't fix anything.
Yeah you think but what'cha gonna do.
Uh, focus on rehabilitation? Instead of sticking people in overcrowded prisons, in the vague hope that somehow spending the majority of their life rotting in a cell will somehow fix both them and society?
Weed, Worse then murder.
Well that's a gross miscarriage of justice and absolutely nothing will happen about it. Yay broken legal system :frown:
Would you like to have someone who has 10+ DUI's driving next to you? Fuck No. I wouldnt want a career dealer on the streets.
Would you like to have someone who has 10+ DUI's driving next to you? Fuck No. I wouldnt want a career dealer on the streets.
there's a difference between a habitual DUI offender and drug dealer and even then, I wouldn't support sentencing someone to life for DUI offenses
That'll teach him. I seriously hate drugs, and even I can see that this is a bullshit sentence.
Would you like to have someone who has 10+ DUI's driving next to you? Fuck No. I wouldnt want a career dealer on the streets.
Selling weed doesn't kill people like drinking and driving does.
Selling weed doesn't kill people like drinking and driving does.
weed killed my father
Would you like to have someone who has 10+ DUI's driving next to you? Fuck No. I wouldnt want a career dealer on the streets.
Wow that is possibly one of the worst analogies I have ever heard. Like, bar none. DUI is an incredibly reckless crime which has immediate and possibly lethal consequences on people other than the one committing the crime. Dealing pot is... dealing pot. Idk about you but i'm pretty sure the people you deal to aren't gonna go off and kill someone.
Would you like to have someone who has 10+ DUI's driving next to you? Fuck No. I wouldnt want a career dealer on the streets.
Someone with that many DUIs would be banned from ever getting a license again
This is terrible. They should sentence him to death.
First of all, he's going to be put in a minimum security prison, most likely. Second of all, it's his own dumbass fault for getting caught three times. Even if I was making a fortune, I would quit after getting caught twice and being told I get three strikes.

Legalize Marijuana, tax the shit out of it. Problem solved.
Legalize Marijuana, tax the shit out of it. Problem solved.
Yeah like some bag of candy in grocery stores "here here, 3dollars for a 300gram bag of decent ganja" or like cigarettes; here buy this pack of 20 joints for 4 dollars.
