Not to shit on everyone's party, but I'd really like to see a source on this. I mean, the numbers themselves are a bit wack - sales grew 666%, with the bundles accounting for 82%. This means that not only did they sell 666% more bundles and non-bundles compared to the normal non-bundle only sale, but they also sold 120% more non-bundles than in the week before. It's not that this couldn't have occurred (I assume some stores simply didn't have the bundle, thus people bought a normal Wii U + Mario Kart or whatever), but I can't find any article mentioning a source - one I can access anyway.
Don't forget that the bundle is the deluxe console and buying a standard edition Wii U and the game is still cheaper than the bundle. So it's not just that the stores didn't stock the bundle.
I don't get that because the most recent Smash game was stomped in sales by its equivalent Mario Kart game. Not to say Smash won't be awesome or won't sell well, but Mario Kart traditionally sells better, I think it's weird how many people assume Smash will be the end all best seller and Mario Kart 8 won't.
Because they've started taking smash seriously.
It seems like the original (oldest) story was done by Eurogamer, but they have no source.
They also announced that future Tomodachi games would support gay relationships. COINCIDENCE???
That 666% in the UK works out to about 12,000 units though. That's nothing special. But the 1.2 million sales total, now that's something.
I find it funny the titles that try to innovate do fucking nothing, Mario Party and Kart? Hotcakes. Gamers send some extremely god damned mixed messages.
that was a really funny joke the first time i heard it like over a year ago
want to know another really funny joke that I last heard about a year ago? the wii u
I find it funny the titles that try to innovate do fucking nothing, Mario Party and Kart? Hotcakes. It's really no surprise that almost everybody and their dog will happily buy Mario Kart, whilst only people who are pretty deep into the gaming scene will buy the more experimental titles.
But then we bitch about Call of Duty.
CoD is yearly, MK is once a console generation
But then we bitch about Call of Duty.
At least when Nintendo releases a new Mario game they at least TRY to add new things. CoD is as close to a reskin as you can come without being literal. Sure it sucks that it's not a whole new IP, but it's not really fair to compare Mario Kart to CoD.
I'm laughin at some of the replies in this thread. Like Nintendo comes forward and says "666% increase," "1.2 Million Sales," "Second Best Selling Mario Kart game in the history of the franchise" and you still got pissbabies spouting things like "lmfao no sales the numbers are fake" I went and got MK8 today. I had to go to three different places because it was completely sold out everywhere I went, and when I did get a copy it's because someone found one under the counter. Shit did well. Wii U's turning around. This is a good thing. Why are you being shitheads about this?
I find it funny the titles that try to innovate do fucking nothing, Mario Party and Kart? Hotcakes. Gamers send some extremely god damned mixed messages.
the sole message is that games with face recognition sell like no tomorrow because everybody and their mother will have heard the previous game was good and jump on it. It doesn't matter what the people who are super into games enjoy, as the majority of the market will always be casuals in favor of safe bets
666% doesn't really mean much if your console wasn't selling very well. Also, it will die down very soon. You also saw this with other Wii U releases where the console sold alot for a short period before dying again. The game sold alot, it is a good game yeah but people who already bought a Wii U are of course going to buy one of the best games to get out on the Wii U. Maybe if this lasts longer, but it is too soon to draw conclusions from 1 day.
The Year Of Luigi actually caused a $456 Million dollar loss for Nintendo.
It wouldn't have been a true Year of Luigi without disappointment and failure. Don't worry though; a Year of Wario oughta fill in that sinkhole with money. And garlic.
The only Nintendo game U can say is CoD-like is New Super Mario Bros.
Even New Super Mario Bros only has one game per console.
Even New Super Mario Bros only has one game per console.
But you have to admit they've used the same franchise a lot in the past few years. Still enjoyable though.
But you have to admit they've used the same franchise a lot in the past few years. Still enjoyable though.
There's only four NSMB games. One for DS (2006), one for Wii (2009), one for 3DS (2012), and one on the Wii U with an expansion pack (2012/2013). I would say it was a bit odd that they had two games in the series come out in the same year but they are pretty different considering the systems they're on.

Seems that Mario Kart 8 actually brought live to the Wii-U for a short time, which possibly help out nintendo. However if only they have more decent games, then the wii-u will probably live longer and won't be another "dreamcast".
This doesn't mean shit, it's just marketing garbage without any real numbers, they're still selling far far faaaar below both the Xbone and PS4.
Doesn't matter because Nintendo doesn't compete in the ~hardcore console wars~
Actually it does matter because Nintendo is losing money over this, you can't keep a massive company like Nintendo alive with sub-par sales.
Good thing the 3DS is raking in dough. [editline]2nd June 2014[/editline] They could also stop making consoles entirely and stick to handhelds where they prevail.
This doesn't mean shit, it's just marketing garbage without any real numbers, they're still selling far far faaaar below both the Xbone and PS4.
Actually, the Wii U 'pre-Mario Kart' still had more units sold overall than the Xbox One.
How can you not buy it?

In the case of something like a game like Mario Kart it's not a matter of not wanting to innovate. It's a matter of not wanting to unbalance the game or make a damning change that's going to be a huge mar on the series name. MK8 does make some good changes too. They added some powerups and rebalanced the blue shell which means the blue shell isn't basically a completely luck based way to drop from first to last place at the last moment. (It now goes straight along the ground spinning out anyone in its path rather than flying through the air and only affecting first place and anyone right next to first place.)
I find it funny the titles that try to innovate do fucking nothing, Mario Party and Kart? Hotcakes. Gamers send some extremely god damned mixed messages.
I'd rather play a well made call of duty game than a fps about a baker punching some pterodactyls if it doesn't play as good. Innovation means fuck all if the game isn't well made or fun.
Who knew releasing games for the Wii U attracted consumers? I've had a dusty Wii U for so long now and it's because there's hardly anything for it. I'm pretty damn excited to get some use out of it with my family now.
I'd rather play a well made call of duty
I'm not trying to take a cheap shot or anything, but when was the last time you saw one of those? Outside of Black Ops II, not very much can be considered "well done". Ghosts and Modern Warfare III were pretty lame and proved to be closer to reskins than anything else, and considering all of the balancing and performance issues, I wouldn't say that they're the role models to take in this situation and I think what you just said is an oxymoron.
