About time they made voice chat not shit!
Woot, Estonia was the birthplace of Skype so I am proud to be an estonian right now.

This is great news; Steam voicechat was horrendous. I must try this out later.
Cool, Skype's quality is great but it's interface is HIDEOUS
The original voice chat codec was terribad, this new one is awesome.
Mmm silk.
They just need to refine the voice chat system a little bit. Show what person is making sound and shit in a multi-user chat
Does anybody know if the ~1 second of delay is gone now? That's why I originally preferred Skype over the steam chat.
Aaaand this is why we love valve: They're constantly improving things. Compare steam now to steam back in 04 when half-life 2 came out; they've made HUGE progress.
It's not like valve is the only ones doing that though.
Aaaand this is why we love valve: They're constantly improving things. Compare steam now to steam back in 04 when half-life 2 came out; they've made HUGE progress.
I still remember when the friends window used to say work in progress.
But how's the latency? I remember when I used it with a Norwegian guy for voice communication in WoW arenas. I'd call out a cast and half a second later, he would say it. I asked him when he said it, he said when the cast started. That's probably a good half second of lag.
Thank god, the old quality raped my ears
The new quality is comparable with most of vents codecs
I want someone to compare this with Mumble so bad. Mumble's got pretty good voice quality but oh god, the latency. There's almost none.
I had no problem regarding latency, but for my friend I just tested it with, he was getting it somewhat choppy and delayed. Also, it's better than the vent codecs, because it's skypes codec.
Now it just needs a mute button like TS.
I'd still love a in-game Music player. Some games aren't really big fans of minimizing... And my connection sucks, so the ingame browser ain't helping.
What we really need is a full framework/API for creating overlay widgets.
Valve keeps rolling out the awesome.
Next step: Steam becomes the next MSN Messenger. I'll sell my soul to Valve the day that happens.
I haven't been in any games with voice chat yet, but is the mic quality like the quality in America's Army 3?
I haven't been in any games with voice chat yet, but is the mic quality like the quality in America's Army 3?
It's the quality of Skype. If you don't know the quality, go download Skype and try it.
I do have Skype, but I haven't used it in months and I've forgotten what it sounds like. I have no one to call :smith:
They shouldn't have even mentioned it, this is nothing nowadays.
Well, considering Steam has about 2 million users online on average (correct me if I'm wrong), it amounts to quite a bit.
Skype uses some-what 3D thing if wearing headphones. Well, it was for me at least.
valve bring back steam friends games :(
No, but they do it most consistently and with the biggest aplomb, because they love their community.
Pretty sure it's because it keeps our money coming to them. They love our wallets, not us. Either way as long as I get good shit from them I don't care.
That morning Harold awoke to find a cheerful little message in his steamfriends chat window with a friend that Steam voice chat had been improved. "It uses SILK?" he asked himself, quickly dismissed the notification and headed off to school. Months later, Portal 2 is released. Harold stuffs the necessary money into his wallet and heads to school. When school is out, he rushes to his local EB Games, hoping to be one of the first to get a copy there. An hour later and he is home, Portal 2 in hand, ready to play. "Come on, faster!" he eagerly whispered to his monitor as he leaned over and flicked on his lamp mid-installation. He didn't need the extra light with four or more hours of daylight left, but this didn't matter to him. Finally, the installation finished, he now owned and has a ready-to-play copy of Portal 2. "Yessss." He messages his friend "xX_DarkKiller175_Xx" through Steamfriends. "Yo, you got P2 instlaled??yet" he crams through the keystrokes. "Yeah just finnished :D" Dark replies. The two load up simultaneously and wait as the engine builds the sound cache. Within seconds they are in a lobby-like listen server, loading the map. Harold finishes loading, but notices Dark has yet to do so. Passing the time, Harold thinks about how fun this is going to be. He remembers, new voice chat. He messages his loading comrade, "oh hey remebmer they added new voice called silk or something lets try it k?". No response. Finally, dark spawns next to Harold in-game. Harold presses his voip key "Yo let's-" he chokes for some reason. Was he about to throw up? Whatever, it was probably nothing. Dark's character is standing stock still. "Oh yeah k" Harold receives in response to Dark in Steam chat. Dark's character jerks its arm as the player has just closed his overlay and is ready to play. Listening to the occasional jokery of the robotic sphere talking to the pair, Harold laughs. He turns on his voip to make a comment. "Haha, you think he-*hhawwooo*". He felt something come up again, forcing him to gag uncontrollably. "Hah, dude wha-*HAGCHK*" Dark responds, gagging as well. Harold is scared, what's happening when he speaks? "Oh man" he says to himself, without gagging. Assuming whatever it was has passed, he turns on his mic again "Alright let's go-*COUGH*" he begins coughing uncontrollably, gagging on something yet again. Dark follows suit, attempting to talk but ultimately getting cut off in a fit of hacking and coughing. Dark has it worse, so taken by this gagging and coughing fit that he is too distracted to take his finger off of his voip key. Violent coughing and gasps for air pierce Harold's headset, followed by the shrill CRACK of the mic hitting something, presumably Dark throwing his headset to the floor. Dark's voip cuts off, his character ceasing movement. Harold's eyes are wide with shock. "Dude, are you oka-*HACK*" he begins gagging and coughing violently for a seeming eternity on something in his throat. Unfortunately, he is suffering the same unawareness as Dark, too distracted to take his hand off of his voip key. So much, in fact, that he doesn't take his finger off the key until it feels as if he will pass out from a lack of oxygen. Finally, he releases his finger from the key. It feels as if whatever it is stuck in his throat is going to come out. With one final, massive effort, he coughs up the object, tonguing it out of his mouth and on to his desk. It feels thin, like paper, yet soft. He stares at his walls, his head still resting on his keyboard, spamming various in-game actions and character events. Finally, his energy somewhat returned, he slides his head backwards along the desk, trying to get a good view of what mucus-covered object has just spawned from the depths of his stomach. His eyes widen in dis-belief. Hoarse from his coughing fit, he questions the object. "... Silk?"
Screaming 12 year olds now twice as deadly.
