Either US only for now or windows 8 only.
yeah, looks like it's win8 only, it also looks very windows 8-ish

I'm from spain so no US only
I found no news about it, so I guess they just rolled it out a few hours ago, try rebooting your pc, that's what I did just before it updating.
I updated to the latest version and it looks exactly the same :v:
Might be a probe (small amount of users are given a different version of something, they give feedback, it's given to more people after aplying feedback, repeat until everyone has it). Youtube does that a lot, wouldn't shock me if Microsoft started doing it too
its been like this on the mobile skype app for awhile. looks better there too.
I just updated and it looks the same

I only just got used to the last UI change, now it's gone and done it again!
Imo looks great except for the fucking speech bubbles.
Haven't even received any update yet.
Yet I know Skype is a piece of shit on me suddenly.
When I join a call, I get a prompt saying Skype has stopped working. However, I can hear the participants and vice versa. I simply can't use the UI in a call anymore. Kind of a win on my end though, as I can't and don't have to answer whenever this fucking kid calls me again.
you need to go to skype's community pages/forums, and there will be a download link posted that will let you get the new UI version.

I haven't used Skype in ages. What real benefit does it have above team speak and mumble
I haven't used Skype in ages. What real benefit does it have above team speak and mumble
Not having to run your server I guess.
It's trying to be iphone text chat.
Yeah because the generic phone text chat is an amazing, clear way of rendering two-party conversations.

Better IM service, not having to run a server, file sharing, among other things.

On a smartphone, yeah.
But it's completely unnecessary and ugly looking in this case.
It has had ads for some time now.
You can block the ads, I did. I haven't had a ad in months.
Updated all the computers in the office and nothing looks any different (XP and Win7 systems).

(Can't really say anything about TS as I don't use it)
Mumble is an open source, low-latency, high quality voice chat software primarily intended for use while gaming.
Mumble doesn't need better IM service or file sharing so those are not actually Skypes benefits over Mumble. So the only benefit would be not having to run a server.
Sure there are free Mumble servers everywhere but I don't really have experience on those as I do run my own server.
Both Skype and Mumble have incredible sound quality though Mumble has a lot of settings for it and the quality also depends on the server's settings.
No such update for me, but I wanted it. Checked for updates but there was just a small one that didn't noticeably change anything
tbh I like the speech bubbles, looks much more cleaner than what we got now
Still wish they migrated some MSN features into skype, like nudges and easier photo sharing using that gallery thing
[editline]17th September 2014[/editline]
Also they should bring back that Skype Me! online status you could select and chat with randoms
And Skype channels where it acted like a radio station in some sense, it was such a clusterfuck tho

Eh, IM Isn't really an issue when you co-host with a XMPP server, same with file sharing (if you're going that route, instead of using Syncthing...).
As for running a server, the windows mumble installation allows you to install Murmur too (The server); it's quite simple to set up and host from your own computer for simple 1-4 people voice chats; XMPP/Jingle has voice capability too.
The only downsides to XMPP +/ Mumble is accessibility and user base size.
May I ask what is this doing in this very specific forum? It's not an article, nor a news post, it's just... well.
Yeah, I know the OP was banned for this, but why do people do these things?
It has had ads for some time now.
Doesn't bother me since I have like $300 worth of Skype Premium some guy gave me
Let's hope they add the option to use group chat pictures back.
I haven't used Skype in ages. What real benefit does it have above team speak and mumble
Don't need to host a server is pretty much it. You get audio-quality generally sub-par compared to mumble, microsoft pretty much bent over to the PRISM program, and it's not open source.
Unless you need to I'd just stick to mumble, I keep skype installed but only for the occasional person who's unwilling to talk through anything else.
this new ui is much better
They removed the timestamps from the chat, you have to mouse over the text to see it now, this is shitty
[editline]17th September 2014[/editline]
nevermind, my chat windows were too small, expanding them a bit revealed the time stamps

One would expect that the forum category to post news is where you are supposed to post news that most of the people care for/are important enough to be there.
I use avatar-free text on steam for my phone
text bubbles look like absolute shit. it's FAR better for every person in chat to have their own color. You read text, it's in Red, it's Bill, it's blue, its Rachael, it's green, it's Jim, etc. It makes it super easy to just read it on the fly. they should have allowed you to instead color code everyone in your list/chat.
[TIMESTAMP][BILL]:[TEXT]
[BILL]:[TEXT]
[TIMESTAMP BECAUSE ITS BEEN 5 MINUTES][JIM]:[TEXT]
[BILL]:[TEXT]
[JOEBOB]:[TEXT]
