It's a pseudo-democratic country ran by ruling families.
Biggest one at the moment being the Gandhi family, the party head being the Italian wife of Rajiv Gandhi (who was the Prime Minister when he was asassinated by Tamil Tigers), Sonia Gandhi. it's estimated she's got a ridiculous amount of personal wealth accrued through various scams, amounting to billions of dollars. She's now positioning her som, Rahul Gandhi, to become the next Prime Minister. Speaking out against them is likely to have local goons from the local Congress party coming to either kill you or beat the shit out of you -such is the level of sycophancy because Anyone allied to the Congress party (as well as the opposition parties) will stand to benefit from a slice of the corruption that powers this government. its grown to the point where my educated vote as a concerned citizen is immediately outdone by some illiterate villager who is promised a free blender if they vote for the opposition.
If Mahatma Gandhi knew what happened to his family name, his corpse would be spinning in its grave so fast you could probably harness and power all of India with it.
according to the u.n. sexual violence study in 2009, the usa has almost twice the amount of rape as south africa (95,136 to 52,425) and almost nine times the amount of india (http://www.unodc.org/documents/data-and-analysis/statistics/crime/CTS12_Sexual_violence.xls). in fact, usa has the highest amount of rape and attempted rape in the world. but that doesnt mean we all say that america is awful because of rape.
the fact is that when it is foreigners being raped, it will be far more reported on, despite it being just as awful as if it happened to someone native to the country.
Do the terms 'relative value' and 'absolute value' hold any meaning to you?
To clarify:
From a population of 300 million, stat statistic puts it that 1 in every 3000 Americans will be a victim of rape. Compared to the 50 million population which puts their rape count at 1 in every 900 South Africans.
india isnt part of asia, why do you keep talking about africa?
india isnt part of asia, why do you keep talking about africa?
What kind of sense is this post supposed to make?
India is part of Asia, and you're the one who brought up South Africa, which even if it was relevant at, is indeed in Africa!!
Yeah, India isn't the world capital of rape, but your latest posts don't do very much good for that argument.

What is the rape capital of the world?
In a country with half a billion men and a male dominated culture.. rape is inevitable.
Apparently Lesotho is the "rape capital" of the world

I don't know, but I've been to India, and there wasn't women being raped around every goddamn street corner like some people seem to think.
burn india

Not to mention slavery in just about every form.
not to derail the battle to determine who's more rapey, but
jumped from the balcony of her room on the first floor and is in hospital with head injuries; both her legs are fractured.
I know she must have tumbled if she was struggling to get out but this still sounds ridiculous

If you look at the actual per capita stats then you find that America actually isn't the worst by far, even the Carribean has more rapes then the US.

Well if she broke the glass with her head that could account for head injuries, but otherwise she might have landed at a bad angle on her legs.
If all tourists in India were equipped with rape whistles, we'd probably go def.
I like how the western media constantly points fingers at other countries (especially if countries are inhabited by PoC which shows the deeply embedded racism of the west) but the west turns around and does the same thing. Point is while we point fingers at others while we ignore our own problems since rape also occurs in the west and most rapists still go unreported and what makes India so different?
In short: Hey look pot calling the kettle black.
i hope no one decides that india is the rape capital of the world because of this. im glad she got away.
e: too late
That's South Africa.
No it's not.
Yes. Yes, it is. It's fucking sensationalism because Western media loves a scandal. You get a country with a population four times the size of the USA, (a seventh of the world's population) add a huge number of people who grew up in rural villages with strange traditions, patriarchal culture and no education, move those people into the seedy parts of cities and you get some sexual assaults and violent crime. This is understood. I do, however, take exception to the way western media's been covering this and little else about India in the last few months, as if it isn't something that happens in every country in the world, those Western countries not least.
[editline]20th March 2013[/editline]
Not that I wish to imply the problem shouldn't be covered. Yes, it should be recognized and social change needs to be enacted to the best extent possible by the people. You've SEEN the response of Indians at large to this bullshit.
I'm saying that this ugly selective reporting certainly implies something else.
[editline]20th March 2013[/editline]
And the facepunchers so selectively choosing their news about India are certainly implying that something else as well. I expected better from you.
I expected better from you.
I think that's where you went wrong, old boy.
I think that's where you went wrong, old boy.
Yeah, we're pretty damn sensationalist 'round these parts.
In a country with half a billion men and a male dominated culture.. rape is inevitable.
Most European countries also have half of their population male and a male dominated culture, doesn't mean rape isn't reprehensible here.

Jumping from the first floor of a building is already far enough to break your legs. If you can't catch your fall correctly you're also going to be very likely to hit your head on the landing too.

Baw fucking aw, cry me a river. I picked this article because the event was mentioned 5 seconds on TV and I decided to pick an online article about it to post it here. In the exact same news show, there was another article about the case of an organized brothel in a French hotel. We're talking about foreign shit as much as our own.
Hell, just go on the website I picked the article from and look at all the articles about violence occurring in their own country, sometimes their own town. There is one about people facing charges for child sex. What's your point now ? I'd love to hear you rant some more about how the fascist western media keep silent on their own matters and promote xenophobia by reporting stuff that happens in other countries.

You certainly know how to lend yourself credibility. Did I hurt your feelings back there? I'm so sorry.
Amusingly enough, I don't ever recall saying that sex crimes from other countries were underrepresented. I clearly stated that it was very interesting that the only India-related news I'd seen on Facepunch lately was rape-related.
