Ubuntu should really focus on fixing their desktop OS before expanding over to mobile honestly. AMD support still sucks and multi-monitor support is horrid.
I'd much rather have them focus on supporting "Android running as the phone OS but hook it up to a HDMI source and it runs true Ubuntu 12.04". I really don't like the way they're handling navigation, seems confusing and unless they can find a way to perfectly emulate Android applications, this thing is not going to gain market share and I doubt that any major manufacturer will support this.

I gave dual booting Ubuntu a go on my tablet a few weeks ago, and unless it's been significantly improved since then, I wouldn't wish that upon anyone.
The interface was constantly hanging, you'd probably have to use the device to control it still, even with display being output through hdmi

I don't think you can blame Ubuntu for the fact it doesn't run well on something that was design to run Android (assuming you're talking about the Nexus 7); I'm sure the people responsible for that are working on it.;

Yeah they definitely still need to work on it but honestly I don't really see a reason for doing that anymore. Earlier in the year, I wanted Ubuntu on my phone to run XBMC but now they've announced the Android native application and even released somewhat stable builds for it, runs great.
Unless you're doing some kind of niche task, and keep in mind when I type this, I work as someone in IT management so I'm doing the "niche tasks", I think native applications will do just fine.

I'm certainly not blaming Ubuntu, I'm just saying at it's current stage, it was not ready for the public. And yes, I'm talking about the N7
Gonna start another savings account already.

Fair enough, it's impressive that they got Ubunutu on it in the first place. But then I guess that just goes to show how close the Android kernel has gotten to mainline (and with luck will see it merged completely).

holy shit speak for yourself
android is a dream to use on a tablet and a phone
iOS doesn't offer as much in that department honestly, WP is kinda cool with it's homescreen thing but lacks everywhere else

I totally agree. Even if you're not using a Nexus device, the top flagships right now run smooth as butter and if you don't like the interface, you can easily customize the hell out of it, back it up and use it until you want to change it again.
While I don't like hooking up my tablet to the television, it is much more functional than the alternatives and even that will be solved once I get the OUYA for my emulators and XBMC.
I mean I guess I see the benefit of being able to carry around a full-fledged copy of Ubuntu on such a mobile device but I can do everything I need to through native applications and that includes FTP, remote desktop, console and browsing.

Here's hoping for a future where the Android changes are merged into the kernel, and the ARM situation gets itself sorted out. Having the ability to install an OS of your choice on your phone (like you can with your PC) would be interesting.
I love how the video started by complaining that there isn't a unified interface across any ecosystem then showed a bunch of ecosystems which have that like an iPhone next to an iPad and then announced one that is probably less like its counterparts than anything else.
The interface sounds pretty ridiculous. A phone screen is way too small to use the edges. It'd be sooo damn easy to accidentally do any edge stuff.
Also, phones are mobile and are taken on the go an most people still have internet limits on their network. Why the fuck is this guy so in love with webapps on a phone?

They should team with IKEA for this.
As long as it has automatic "search on the internet" thing count me out.
As an android dev, I'm interested to see how they set up their apps.

Then turn it off

Would anyone happen to have a link to this "Linux Distro" for my phone? I've got a Gnex and I'd love to give this a shot.

This is why I use Sabayon. I know for a fact it has much better AMD support, and I'm not too sure about multi-monitor, because I only have 1 monitor.
I think Microsoft should take note of this interface.
