That is the legal term for a fully-automatic weapon. Under US law, any weapon capable of firing more than one round with one pull of the trigger is a "machine gun". It was made so by the National Firearms Act way back in 1934, making "Machine Gun" a legal definition for full-automatic weapon. So blame that, not the author.
