The only hostage taking in this situation was the Democrat Senators taking government financing hostage in order to pass their legislative agenda. Eventually the Democrat Senators realised how wrong they were to do that, hence why they have now agreed to support the Republican bill to re-open government and provide funding for CHIP. Now that that's out of the way, the Senators can move on to passing DACA.
Centrist my arse. You didn't do a good job covering up your red and blue elephant tattoo.
No you are't. Democrats are generally the pragmatic party.
Republicans are the feelings party.
Take, for instance, crime.
Being tough on crime? Feels like a great way to reduce crime! Nope. If you could possibly be any more wrong about that, you would somehow generate a rip in space.
Best way to reduce crime? Not treat criminals like shit. Even if you disagree with it morally, it is the pragmatic choice because it is proven to reduce crime.
Abortion?
It isn't a baby. It isn't a person. It is a lump of cells. Meanwhile the host to it is absolutely a human who should be given the option to choose what to do with her body.
Immigration?
WE BENEFIT FROM ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. They are some of the most law abiding citizens because they can be deported for almost any infraction. They don't make use of government services, but because companies automatically deduct taxes from payroll (that the undocumented workers can't get back because they can't file their taxes), they pay into a system that they almost universally cannot take out of. All the bullshit fear mongering about immigrants is just that: fear mongering.
Shitting on the environment?
In what fucking retard world is it smarter to burn through limited resources that pollute the atmosphere for energy when you can literally harness the power of the sun to generate power? Unlimited power with almost zero consequence or resource consumption. Like how much paint do you have to eat before coal seems like a great idea?
Democrats are the party of pragmatism. Republicans are all about being pack of special insecure snowflakes.
It's funny, I don't know if you were explicitly linking the two but abortion is also pragmatic because of crime. Crime rates have gone down to lower than ever since Roe v. Wade. . .

Look, I don't want any trouble. Trump has a lot of problems, and republicans have a lot of problems. I've been lurking these forums for a long time, and never felt compelled to post until now; I'm sorry for any offense I cause.
My wife and I are having a baby, we just hit sixteen weeks. We've had three ultrasounds, roughly every four weeks.
That feotus was NOT, categorically, not, a clump of unaware cells or tissue. I used to believe like you do, I really did. But that little guy had arms and legs at like, six weeks. It swam around and moved all the time in there. It was twitching and moving, pumping and punching with it's little limbs, not constantly, but enough to be entertaining.
I shit you not, it would move, react to the ultrasound and turn to face the wand as if investigating where the wubwubwub noise was coming from. It was freaky because it moved FAST, and because on the screen it looked like it was staring at us. That was at nine weeks, or there abouts.
You sound like you hate unborn babies, and I don't mean that as an insult, it's just the way you are talking about them like they are a disease; like they are a parasite; like they should be destroyed. (Lump, not human, host. Those are terms for cancer.) You probably meant it in a different way, so sorry for getting the wrong impression.
Trump's a fucking asshole. Pretty much everyone in politics is horrible. Fetuses are alive, and pretty active little creatures. I hope you aren't to terribly offended by my experience, I know you didn't ask for anyone's input on your post, but I had to say something.
Sorry to interrupt this lively conversation, and if I get banned, please at least leave my post up, if only until gunfox sees it.

Nah, you are good man, no worries.
I'm referencing the relatively recent Republican viewpoint that they are humans from conception. Which is categorically untrue and is an unfair characterization for the women who have to go through the trauma of having an abortion. Up until about the 12th week, it really isn't much other than a clump of cells tasked with reproducing. There are arguments to be made for other timelines, but 12 weeks is also about the time that clinics start refusing to perform abortions.
So basically about the time most people feel comfortable telling friends that they are pregnant, is about the same time that abortions stop. In both cases, the reasoning is similar- it roughly stops being a clump of cells and starts to become a proper independent entity. While it is terrible to miscarry, it isn't the same as losing it later in the pregnancy (or, obviously post).
Being accurate with our terminology let's us avoid shaming women who need to get an abortion.
Hopefully that clears things up.
Babies good.
Shaming women bad.
Accurate terminology good.
Life begins at conception bad.

I'm very bummed that the Democrats are giving up on a important issue
