Xi warns Taiwan will face 'punishment of history' for separatism..
BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Xi Jinping warned self-ruled Taiwan on Tuesday that it will face the “punishment of history” for any attempt at separatism, offering his strongest warning yet to the island claimed by China as its sacred territory.
Taiwan is one of China’s most sensitive issues and a potentially dangerous military flashpoint.
China’s hostility towards Taiwan has risen since the 2016 election of President Tsai Ing-wen from the pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party.
China suspects Tsai wants to push for formal independence, which would cross a red line for Communist Party leaders in Beijing, though Tsai has said she wants to maintain the status quo and is committed to ensuring peace.
China has been infuriated by U.S. President Donald Trump’s signing into law legislation last week that encourages the United States to send senior officials to Taiwan to meet Taiwanese counterparts and vice versa.
If there wasn't concern over Xi before, hopefully the past few months have made it abundantly clear that he's not someone that the world should take lightly in any capacity.
Separatism? The Republic of China was the legitimate Chinese government until the Communists drove them off the mainland. China, you are the separatists!
Trump telling China to fuck off has been the only thing right he's done. I hopethey keep supporting Taiwan.
And the world decided to take PRC as the legitimate China for economic and Soviet Union hate boner reasons
And then we had the stupid one China policy.
The Chinese Civil War was such a shitty thing and the last thing the Republic of China needed. They had to deal with the Japanese and then their own citizens turned on them after the war.
taiwan has every right to be a sovereign nation and no one should be convinced otherwise by china.
IF and that's a big if, China decides to invade it would be catastrophic for both sides. The US is obligated to help Taiwan with its military. This is probably just China trying to provoke Taiwan, could China even invade Taiwan? They aren't exactly vulnerable by any means, they have a sizeable military
Taiwan deserves Independence just as much as any other nation .
Pretty sure we have some pact or something saying if Taiwan is attacked by Communist China we will defend them.
I mean, Chiang Kai-shek literally massacred as many GMD communists as he could because he was worried (justifiably) that they'd take control of the party. There was a semi-unified front of nationalists and communists in the ROC until that point.
If we lived in an alternate history where Sun Yat-sen never died, the ROC would still control mainland China. Chiang Kai-shek was a fascist fighting communists - it wasn't their people "turning on them," it was in-party ideological conflict. Chiang Kai-shek was twice the tyrant of any of the early communists in the GMD. He killed them and drove them out to secure his own power, even though they had a lot of public support. He suppressed ideological opponents to maintain control - a bit ironic that Xi is doing the same shit now.
I never knew about that. Thanks for the info. Makes more sense now considering I now know Chiang was a huge asshole.
Pfft, Taiwan is ludicrously vulnerable. They're but one tiny little island scarcely a few hours by ship from the largest military in the world. If China wanted to take that island by force they'd have it done inside of 48 hours simply by sheer overwhelming numbers, likely quelling any final resistance before enough US forces to do something about it can arrive at all.
They still have a formidable defense and a security pact with the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Hopefully that wouldn't end up like Ukraine instead where Taiwan gets invaded and everyone is just like "oh pls dont do that its not nice"
Spoiler: To do otherwise would require going to war against China.
It's going to be exactly like Crimea.
The population of Taiwan is, unfortunately, not valuable enough to provoke nuclear exchanges, and both China and Russia are run by dictators who want to or have eliminated term limits to install themselves as dictator for life.
Communism was a mistake.
The US has been to war with china before, the Korean War. Didn't end up too well but they upheld their end of the bargain alongside the Brits. If you can see into the future and tell me this is just going to be like Crimea then I want some of that magic!
There will be no nuclear exchange, but Taiwan has a lot of backing from countries whether they say it or not. They are a Sovereign State and are recognised by quite a few countries, this would be a crime due to the UN decision on wars I can't remember the proper term for it. Yeah you can say the UN is useless, but I really doubt China would invade. They need to weigh up their options, the consequences (economically for one).
I believe Taiwan is secure, with the backing of other countries. Nobody wants another Crimea, this isn't a Crimea either it's a Country.
Ukraine, including Crimea, was a sovereign state, too. They were even looking for possible EU membership (to protect them against Russia).
So how about that shit.
the difference is that tiwan is an important member of the economy of south east asia and china would have to fight a fucking bloodbath of an invasion because their military lacks air power and naval power to carry out an invasion and hold the island.
granted, this would be a scenario where the US and local powers chose to intervene which is almost a certainty but then Trump...
