The data from this survey contradicts that idea in predominantly Muslim countries, which are relevant since we are talking mostly about first-gen immigrants: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1195/dbd12c62-e3b8-4717-ac5e-e43537938d03/5.PNG
Keyword want. I'm sure the little 5 years old girl understands and wants to cover herself up, for modesty, so that she won't tempt any men.
there's probably another reason that their parents want them to wear headscarves
Okay, care to share or are you gonna keep going with these empty replies?
Maybe just because they want to! Maybe for the sake of fashion! Maybe, as someone mentioned earlier, for cultural reasons! I think the issue is way more complex than "No headscarf good, wearing a headscarf bad"
"The Muslims just want to wear headscarves for fun, it's got nothing to do with a core religious tradition of Islam that exists for over a thousand years!" Really? And again, we are talking about the kids. The kids do not choose to wear headscarves. The kids are told to wear them and most likely get punished if they don't. The parents can do what they want, I don't care.
Hey remember when france subjugated its Muslim minorities just like this then it became the victim of radical islamists terrorist attacks that killed hundreds? Man that was weird. Maybe other countries should take a lesson from that; people react poorly to being subjugated for no other reason than xenophobia.
Can you prove this in any way with absolute certainty?
Headscarves can be used in an oppressive way (like saudia arabia) but they aren't inherently oppressive. And a woman wearing a headscarf doen't mean they're a fanatic.
Are you actually suggesting that people attempt to educate themselves about the negative aspects of a religious sect by talking to leaders of that religion? Come on, you can't possibly say that in good faith.
I really don't want to get into a anecdotal evidence fight
If you sincerely don't believe that that example ever happens then an anecdote is literally all that I need to prove you wrong.
Nobody here has said that headscarves arent used oppressively. But its also fuckin stupid to assume every instance is oure oppression. Theres plenty of Christian women that are forced to wear ankle length skirts, cross necklaces, and not allowed to have peircings or tattoos. No legislation regarding that. Any legislation against stuff like headscarves or burkinis is blatant xenophobia and attempts at subjugating unwanted minorities.
I absolutely in no way, shape, or form implied this.
Not that I necessarily agree with outlawing religious garments, but choosing not to do it because you want to capitulate to irrational Islamic terrorists isn't really a good principle to write laws on.
No, but not subjugating minority citizens is not capitulating with terrorists. Honestly, treating minorities as equally as you do with the majority seems like a pretty good trade if you HAD to give something up to terrorists. I was just pointing out that France went on a xenophobic tear, then had people within oppressed groups rise up against them. Neither group is justified but its pretty easy to avoid situations like that by not being an asshole to your citizens.
