Trump to NRA: Knife crime left London hospital 'like a war zone'

It's not - only the murder rate between NY / London is compared, remember. US averages are a lot higher, NY is doing really rather well afaik.
I'm de-railing a bit but i'm way more scared of shit like slings or manuballistas simply for how much more brutal they are compared to guns. A sling looks kinda stupid until a rock flying at 170 mph crashes into your ribcage and sends bone shrapnel into your lungs and a manuballista just goes right through you and into the next 2 dudes behind you from a range of 200 yards with a effective range of 400 yards and a fire rate comparable to bolt action rifles from a device mass produced 2000 years ago. Torsion springs are scary man.
The more I delve into history the more I think guns are just a fancy iteration of things that could do the same job beforehand but in a much more sophisticated and ingenious way.
On the battlefield, medieval armor provided suitable protection against ranged weapons like arrows, bolts and chunks of rock.
The moment guns came around, all bets were off. It was stopping power at an unrivaled level.
You know what, man? If somebody manages to go on a successful mass shooting with a ballista, they've earned their fifteen minutes of fame...

they could always set it up at a bus stop, hide it under a tarp, and then whip the tarp off and attempt to skewer everyone as they line up to board the bus.

You seem to have a gross underestimation of just how much better guns are at killing than any other ranged weapon.
Early guns were generally pretty shit in terms of penetration because of the low quality of the powder used and the crudeness of the barrels, compounded with finicky ignition systems, but granulation, better firing systems, and better metallurgy/manufacturing techniques rendered plate-mail obsolete in time, yes.
You're getting muzzle-loader rates of fire at best with something like that. And a shitton of bulk. And infinitely less firepower, range and precision.
Additionally arrows don't break up upon hitting bone and tear up insides as much as bullets do.
I wasn't debating efficiency but brutality I understand that wasn't well choriographed and Ill try better next time.
I thought 5.56 was designed to fragment on impact if the velocity was high enough? Otherwise it does what you just said when it doesn’t fragment on impact?
