What better way to celebrate NASA's 60th birthday than by violating the act that created it.
The false emperor seeks to emulate the TRUE God Emperor of Mankind by making his own "Space Marines". Let it be known that the Adeptus Astartes will not be phased by such poor emulation of his blessed spear.
Even if/when conflicts happen in space, its better to be prepared to intercept objects that could destroy us, right now most of the population could die from atomic weapons, and odds are we never will, you're assuming people dont/wont change for the better and automatically assuming the future will be a paranoid stalemate. That's pretty sad and pessimistic.
So now the nukes are in orbit and can hit targets even faster - without leaving any sort of thermal trail.
You're assuming that we would necessarily be in a more peaceful world with weapons in space. Let me promise you that is absolutely not guaranteed.
I mean, what the US had before was the one thats structurally identical to the current Russian setup.
US Armed Forces -> US Air Force- > AF Space Command
Russian Armed Forces -> Russian Aerospace Forces (=Air Force) -> Russian Space Forces
I agree, also I'd imagine the Space Command people will be happy now that they won't have to compete with other sub-branches of the Air Force for funding.
To me, He should firstly refunded NASA first before established "Space Force".
And think about Space Force? Why American Intergalactic Armed Force if he wants to established it while being kinda sound serious in same time?
It won't be called the Space Force. It'll just be called US Space Command. All it's going to do is move the Air Force Space Command out of the Air Force. It's pointless, really
I suspect with how the space industry is quickly becoming a private venture, that it's possible this may be used more-or-less as a method of preventing space piracy.
Without some form of law enforcement preventing salvagers from attacking old satellites, and causing disputes over mining rights on celestial bodies, you can bet your ass that we'll see mercenaries/security teams being sent up with astronauts for protection reasons.
Of course this type of thing will hopefully not occur until at least the 2030's ~ 2040's, but with space mining industries becoming more profitable, it's inevitable we'll see space piracy/salvage raids.
This is really too far in the future at best.
I was joking when I said we need to tell a certain orange that the only way to beat the Russians was to build a super space laser or two (and build a colony on mars).
Apparently somebody didn't get the memo.
Well the military slid this onto Kennedy's desk when he had the choice of either using NASA or the U.S. military to spearhead the space race and he was horrified at the amount of cold war escalation it would cause:

So we weren't far off from building at least space galleons
Sign me the fuck up. I've always wanted to be a space shuttle door gunner.
Fucking dingus. It's supposed to be the Spacy.
he ruins everything
God damn he really is Reagan 2.0, this is the Star Wars shit all over again.
Thousands of years of human history shows that we enjoy destroying each other - it's going on right now. It's a fairly safe bet.
Not really. People have been actually asking for this for a long time. As stated earlier in the thread, the idea is that they would take over the existing space commands, so that they exist in an administrative environment designed from the ground up with procurement processes designed for spacecraft. The fundamental procedures, deadlines, etc. don't really work for that.
Now, I can basically guarantee you that Trump didn't really think of it beyond that it sounded cool and that a bunch of generals were talking to him about it, but it might actually be one of the best things you could do to tackle several of our real issues with administrative bloat.
our anti ballistic missile system can be easily oversaturated by any one of the big nuclear armed states. the point was never to be able to stop dozens of MIRVed launchers but to stop the one or two from some nutjob like Kim (now bestleader) or Sadam Husain
if the russians or the chinese unleash their nuclear arsenal our ABM system wouldn't stand a chance, the difference between 20 dozen nukes and 19 dozen nukes going off is pretty paltry
Militarizing space seems like a dangerous idea. I hope that the marines to serve in space will have some kind of codex to adhere to, so things don't get out of hand.
No escape

I think practical exploration of space is far beyond our lifetime
Far beyond the human lifespan.
I think it's a good idea that the USA wishes to plant the seeds of democracy and freedom in space.
If it gets a fraction of our military budget it will propel space research on a scale we have never seen before. Why is this a bad idea?
Personally I would rather have US dominance in space than China or Russia. This isn't even Trumps idea, it's being floated around for years now and he just stole it.
We've stayed away from weaponizing space because of the extraordinary cost. Have fun pouring trillions into Lockheed Martin and Boeing for the military to hoard all of the technology vehicles just like Submarines.
Who the fuck cares who came up with it or started it.
It is absolutely necessary to improve our space faring technology whether it be by the private sector like SpaceX or by the military. It will help safe guard humanity's existence.
I'm all for this. Any money going towards space is good money.
I can hope that costs are saved by going with newer companies and not those rip-off military-industry companies. (spacex, not lockheed / boeing)
but even if that is the case, any money that is spend pales in comparison to what can be gain from making interplanetary / space travel more accessible.
