That's because of the parliamentary system. We elect the electors who can vote for the president in the electoral college (they can vote for whoever they want, Bernie got one electoral vote in 2016) Fun fact, some political experts believe a presidential system of government will inevitably fall into authoritarianism because of the polarization of popularly electing the headof state and the power of the executive branch.
Wasn’t one of his ‘good foreign’ policy’s prolonging the vietnam war by sabotaging President Johnson’s 68 peace talks?
Nixon got word that Johnson was going to do a last minute effort to win the election for Humphrey by ending the war, Nixon got a woman with connections in Asia, Anna Chennault to keep him appraised of the situation. She told Nixon that the president of South Vietnam had no intentions of a peace conference. After Johnson ordered the halt he ordered an illegal FBI wiretap on Nixon staff and Chennault, and got this "I have just heard from my boss in Albuquerque who says his boss is going to win. And you tell your boss to hold on a while longer."[4] While Chennault, in 1997, claimed that "I was constantly in touch with Nixon and Mitchell," the wiretaps contain no smoking gun as to Nixon's knowledge of any of Chennault's activities. Historian Robert Dallek wrote that any efforts by Chennault "probably made no difference" because Thieu was unwilling to attend the talks and there was little chance of an agreement being reached before the election.[5] Similarly, it is not clear whether the government of South Vietnam needed much encouragement to opt out of a peace process they considered disadvantageous.[6]
