You're assuming he's capable of empathy. My personal experience has shown me multiple times that some people are literally incapable of empathy.

Real sincerely-seen tears come unprovoked after someone legitimately tries to hold them back. A manipulator forces them forward to rub into your face and - just as quick - puts them back. Tears often also come with quiet mourning rather than righteous indignation. He's doing himself no favors here.
