Another possibility is that it did happen but neither really knew it was sexual assault at the time. I think sexual assault as a concept is a relatively recent idea. RAINN, the largest organization in the united states working to prevent sexual assault and protect victims, was only founded in 1994. The awareness of the issue simply wasn't there back then.
