Nancy Pelosi to make LGBT Equality Act top priority if Democrats take House

Man lets just hope that if you put social issues at the forefront of your party, that people will vote for it. tl;dr, this is the worst headline.
Hey did you know the government can do multiple things at once? Isn't that cool?
No shit. Just the headline doesn't convince anyone of that.
If you really can't understand
Parties can focus on multiple things at once
This is a massive issue that is personaly affecting the lives of many Americans
And just because it doesn't affect you doesn't mean its not a problem
Then I really don't know what to say to you.
I dont think a news headline should have to explain the basic concept that the us government is capable of doing several things at the same time.
In fact everyone should be able to know that.
There is nothing trivial asking why transgender rights appear front and center and how that is supposed to appeal to voters.
Okay. I dont understand your point.
You clearly understand they can focus on issues that don't affect you AND ones that do at the same time. Please explain why this upsets you.
Your comment was "in fact everyone should be able to know that", however this is a forum, probably of educated people who can afford an internet connection, so yeah, everyone here probably understands government well, but to the average voter? No. I don't see the democrats doing well if social issues are going to remain the forefront of its policies, economic policies are a must, social are a luxury.
interesting how advancing civil rights in response to ongoing efforts by the current administration to clamp down on vulnerable people (this article dropped last week which is very apt given yesterday's news about the redefinition of gender/sex protection, but Trump's admin has been revoking federal protection for trans people since day 1) is seen as a waste of time, but the aggressive campaign of trans-erasure that the GOP is needlessly spending time and resources on that creates these issues isn't worth commenting on huh
Democrats are between +7 and +13 on the generic ballot. They have over 80% chance of winning the House, maybe by over 50 seats. They may pick up over 10 governor's mansions, and the only reason they might
not make large Senate gains is because the class up for reelection is one of the most Republican friendly ever.
I think the average voter knows that the government does several things at once.
Also calling lgbt rights a "luxury" says a lot. Wow.
I think Boilrig might be disingenuously feigning concern over the "how the headline appears to voters" to mask the possibility that they just don't give a shit about this or LGBT people in general.
she said it herself "top priority" lol the rest of america comes second
shes basing her presidency around a social issue lol? while it may be in YOUR best interests that these things are attended to it isnt exactly in the rest of ours. not saying i agree with what trumps currently doing and tbh hes shooting himself in the foot but what pelosi is doing here is obviously opportunistic holier-than-thouing that trump is pretty much lining them up for. boilrig is presenting a good point-- theres alot of shit going on in the country right now and TBH these types of debates are only fueling this social war thats been spurned up
until she shows some competence as a leader the whole "i will free the oppressed" doesnt impress any of us
So you're tired of people shitting on you for being ignorant in economics and statistics and want another avenue, huh?
people that are more likely to have problems or already have worse problems because of their sexual/gender orientation getting a higher priority doesn't necessarily seem unfair given the already unfair circumstances they're subjected to for archaic, unacceptable reasons
I would say the average voter wouldn't know what their party was doing if they read that headline. And yes, social issues act as luxuries over economic. You use your economic policies as a base to then secure your social policies in power.
No, my concern is that it hurts the democrats, it will get flagged as PC by the right and then it all goes sideways.
do quote the part she said herself that offends you so
do also explain why supporting one group means failing the rest of america, and why you're a selfish asshole who puts your personal improvement over basic equality
I'm actually with boilrig on this. The democrats need to focus on something that appeals to everyone, not just something that appeals to liberals.
On the otherhand, they would need to control the senate too if they want to push something greater through like a real economic and ecologic reform, so LGBT protections are very reasonable within the scope of the House. I think they should go after voter protections too so nobody can ever disenfranchise voters the way republicans are doing right now.
you are focusing on such tiny, nitpicky things here, then decide to ignore swathes of information if it doesnt fit your worldview.
grow up.
^ concern troll
as usual, his sole purpose on this forum is to derail threads into the ground if you give him the time of day
How many people will really see this headline?
i get that and i hate to minimize your plight but theres alot more issues going on worse than certain people being fired/excluded/whatever. if anything this is a cultural issue! right now you could have a better leader with all the same interests BUT also have the ability to lead the rest of the country. what happens when this pelosi lady churns out this bill? then what? she's shown nothing of a capable leader past that and electing her on the basis of "LGTB RIGHTS!" isnt enough for me im sorry
grr! i am angerey that this she-human is trying to give sit-ee-zens equal rights! grr!
I'm not here to derail the thread. This opinion piece sums up the situation.
What the hell, Boilrig? This is such a weird thing to get hung up on.
Other priorities identified by Pelosi were a campaign finance reform
package, expanded background checks for gun purchases and legislation to
protect young, undocumented immigrants known as DREAMers from
deportation.
Drew Hammill, a Pelosi spokesperson, told the Washington Blade the
Equality Act will be a “top priority” and receive a low bill number from
1 to 10 should they have a majority, which will designate its
importance.
“In the House, the majority will signal a piece of legislation is a
top priority by assigning it a bill number between 1 and 10,” Hammill
said. “Leader Pelosi has decided the Equality Act will get one of these
priority bill numbers, indicating its importance to House Democrats.”
The article mentions that they have other priorities in mind, just that LGBT and women's rights are important. It might not even be the first thing they pass, it could be as late as the tenth bill.
It's a top priority when it's a group that's under attack right now way more than others. If you fail to see that you're willfully ignorant at this point.
Caring about the wellfare of people different than you is physically impossible for you I see.
She said "top priority" not "higher priority". Those were actual words not even implications.
And are you implying that theres no other people who have much more severe issues?
As much as I respect LGBT people, I find it arrogant to think that LGBT problems overshadow everyone elses.
What, like the reforms we passed after 2008 that the GOP have been working to peel back?
You must be trying real hard to miss the point as consistently as you are.
