Maybe both can be valid but you are doing a really bad job of explaining why the rise of fascism is some deterministic eventuality of democratic society, as if it just happens and the people who vote wannabe dictators in have absolutely no agency.
Since you asked, Bolsonaro's "opposite extreme" would appear to be someone who believes that life has intrinsic value and the purpose of civil society is mutual advancement to that purpose. In other words, the opposite of Bolsonaro would appear to be a person who meets the basic requirements of democracy.
Is this how you defend his own support of the ditadura? Linking an article is easy, and if you want to say that one perfectly summarizes your stance, that's fine. I just find it weird that, even after you put all your hopes and dreams for change on Bolsonaro, you don't have the words to defend him. What of his "violence must be fought with violence" comments and leniency on police killings, do you share the sentiment? What of his talk about shooting PT voters, do you brush it off as a joke? Do you agree that the military was simply "answering the pleas of the population", and that only criminals died during the dictatorship? There's a clear trend in his thinking, and it's not good for democracy
Yeah, it is. That is what happens when you only have two parties to choose from, else the Republicans wouldn't have to cater to the far-right. This is also why the Democrats can range from far-left to basically center-right. Your system is inherently flawed, and now you see the outcome of it.

Brazil's previous government were not radical leftists, even though it would be justified under your logic for them to be due to the dictatorship that Brazil used to be ruled by for decades. I'm just a gringo and I know this. You clearly don't have a fucking clue about Brazilian politics or history and you're just trotting out the horseshoe theory like it has any relevance here. Maybe leftists insulted you because you act like an arrogant and enlightened centrist who tries to justify fascism. Go away if you don't have a real argument.
Ohohoho this is just the beginning Soon, this will spread more and more You have nowhere to run
"are we the baddies" continues to be eternally relevant
All situations exist so you may take an advantage of them. Use this wisely
"you have nowhere to run" over the election of a guy who praised pinochet, and declared he'd shoot the opposition, is not a good look, just saying
This fuckwit getting elected is not only bad news for Brazil, but bad news for the rest of the world in general. Any form of Far-right Governments or Neo-Fascist authoritarian dictatorships always has the chance to bleed over and influence neighboring countries and other far-right/alt-right groups that exist across the globe. Its a Cancer that won't stop spreading unless its stomped out of existence. I will say Good Luck to the Brazilian and other South American Facepunchers. cause you'll definitely need it to remove this pathetic excuse of human genetic material out of office and clean whatever influence he has out of Brazilian and South American Politics.
Are you saying the entire world outside of right-leaning political groups is an echo chamber? That seems kind of backwards
What a bunch of thoughtless bullshit. Of course, we rewrote our constitution and had a fucking emperor because we're radical leftists, that makes complete sense. Please excuse me for a moment while I go cry my eyes out about our history of ~socialism~ which brought me 35h weeks, paid leave, a high enough minimum wage to survive, legal union protection, strict laws that protect me from abusive firings, public retirement funds, cheap education and a functional healthcare system that doesn't break my bank whenever I catch a cold. Boy oh boy, do I wish I grew up in some US right-to-work state instead, where I could get laid off if I so much as refused to suck my boss's dick, where I'd have to work several jobs to be able to feed my family, where I wouldn't have been able to afford quality higher education, where I'd have to keep working until I keel over because I wouldn't be able to save for retirement since I'd live paycheck to paycheck, where I'd have to brush off various health issues instead of getting them checked out, all while being told I deserve the situation I'm in because my countrymen convinced themselves that anybody can make it big as long as they work hard, and that conversely, if you're poor then it's your own damn fault for being lazy. Keep telling yourself that the US are not the political outliers, despite the fact that your "left wing" corresponds to not only France's, but most of the developed world's right wing, or that your "right wing" are religious fundamentalists who deny citizens the most basic of rights. After all, denying undisputable and demonstrable facts is but a staple of your oh-so-moderate right wing, isn't it?
I like how they write off the all insane shit he's said as "offensive comments" in a tiny little paragraph, and go "I'm sure they'll just vote him out" as if he would actually let that happen.
Roots in religion Gosh wonder why we can't get shit done
bout choked on my drink while reading this.
oh wow, looks like your 'logical centrist' mask slipped.
What. Many countries run just fine while being left leaning.
It's just a dumb little thesis that armchair political scientists on the internet like because it's simple.
And using right leaning economics..
how have you concluded that one then?
Haddad's campaing for the most part was basically claiming that "Haddad = Lula" and that "Bolsonaro is a child-eating lunatic", and yet for the second round they dropped Lula and the red theme and went for Yellow and Green (Brazil's flag). Don't forget that anyone that got even remotely close to that nutjob Bolsonaro saw absurd boosts in popularity, lots of candidates who had absolutely no voting base spiked in popularity in a weekspan. You mean the same one that have been on the reigns of Brazil for more than a decade? Lay off the conspiracy theory, Operation Car Wash indicted Brazil's wealthiest and most powerful, they are the elite. 60k muders a year, more than 130 military police officers executed by criminals, rampant corruption schemes dealing with upwards of more than 10 billion dollars, broken financial institutions, subpar or underfinanced federal universities, social programmes that are unable to give people a semblance of a dignified life, <...>
Does Norway use right leaning economics?
Only a true leftie is a full blown commie, didn't you know?
Can we call this guy the centrist Tudd?
Bolsonaro's tough guy stance on crime is going to be disastrous. Our police force is already reckless and abusive, now this guy's supportive of more police killings? And I'm not putting much stock on the idea that he'll in any way improve the situation we have with corruption. He is openly revisionist of events both historic and current, and identifies with a government widely characterized by its censorship of critics, so let's see how far corruption allegations get in his government. And how exactly is Bolsonaro going to fix our social programs with his reactionary attitude towards free handouts, and ridiculously overblown claims of fraud? (I know, you're just listing grievances, not standing by him as a path to fixing them, I am simply posing the question) Let's not sanitize what we are. Homophobic killings are rampant, racism and misogyny are alive and well. Prejudice against people from the northeast is almost fucking expected in the south. People applaud vigilante mobs that tie up and beat petty thieves. People are scared, yes, and rightfully frustrated at PT, but it lead them to a decision that's ignorant of the facts, but in the case of some voters, it has been outright malicious. I do empathize with the Bolsonaro voter who, because of circumstance, had poor to nonexistent education, financial stability, and safety. I think the voters who acknowledge he's dangerous, but believe our democracy will withstand his worst impulses are naive to take the risk. But I utterly despise the people who had the money and the opportunity to know better, and still dive head first into the bullshit about the dictatorship being benign, or the bigotry not affecting public perception ("isso se aprende de berço, presidente não vai influenciar nada!"). Though they often turn out to be bigots themselves, funny what they'll say about blacks and northeasterners behind closed doors. Last but not least, I want to bring up the support he got from big business owners, and evangelical leaders. Which come with perks, such as a franchise-wide threat of recording your employee's votes and firing them if they don't vote Bolsonaro, or coverage biased towards you in the second most viewed TV channel in the country + almost guaranteed support of the most fervently religious, respectively. Not to mention the alleged 12 million in Whatsapp campaigns, and the verifiable disparity between the amount of fake news that favored him over Haddad. I know you don't want unrealistic demonization of the other side, but I'm just telling you I don't buy this picture of the righteous Bolsonaro voter, driven by desperation into making the hard choice, hands washed clean of any responsibility over anything bad that happens, because those were not the parts they voted for. This is an exaggeration and the sentiment won't always be expressed this bluntly, but, hopefully, you can see what I mean https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/172/c208e68c-6568-454d-9c36-149c15f93be2/image.png in the meantime i'm surprised we didn't get any jeb! memes out of this guy. cabo daciolo, who went to live on a mountain and said the trees would vote for him
