Scotland introduces LGBT+ lessons in school curriculum

people's estimation of what is appropriate or inappropriate is determined by their values, who'd've thunk?
Rating a murder story funny would be inappropriate, just like rating a progressive school stance on lgbt+ issues is
Would you feel better if it was incorporated into maths and English lessons/exams?
For instance:
If Ben bones 16 dudes and Lisa has sex using a strap-on with Sarah 3 times, how many people in total have had sex?
or...
If somebody calls a trans woman a man repeatedly, they are:
a) transphobic
b) a dick
c) Bee York
d) all of the above
how am i being transphobic??
It's communication. You're making a statement.
A few examples:
You're saying it's dumb to have LGBT education
You're saying it's dumb of fox to pull an anti-immigration ad
You're saying it's a win to ban asylums
You get the point. In general, you seem to dislike anyone who's a disadvantaged minority. And you're always happy to tell this to us. I don't get why.
Is it trolling, or are these your genuine opinions?
i still dont see how that equates to transphobia. also see my previous bag of word salad for how i feel about that
I'm not the one making that claim. I'm not going to argue for it either.
I am just messing around with the transphobic thing, mate, although I do think complaining about it not being useful to know about LGBT issues is dumb still.
I'm rather amused by the mental image of an angry Scotsman explaining LGBTQ stuff.
Maybe its just my social anxiety but I guess my biggest qualm with this is knowing there will be people out there like me who don't like being in a spotlight being put in the exact situation they'd hate. I'm completely ok with people learning more about LGBT stuff, but I just don't think a school classroom is really the best place. I'd really feel more comfortable if I/they had been just given the information in private, and the dickish people dealt with in private. Having this all being put in a public light is just.... aaaaagh.
Maybe it would help! I don't really know, but speaking from the heart I just don't feel like this is the best route for making lgbtbbq'ers more accepted.
we have sex ed to teach us about how our funny parts work. educating, teaching the concepts of LGBT seems to be a natural inclusion.
See: the id. Sexuality is an instinctual level component of being human, and people who go against instinct and the id are obviously gonna be seen as outsiders, no matter the situation. Could be anorexics, could be gay/trans people, could be extreme introverts. You can't just teach away instinct to someone, and I doubt humanity is going to evolve fast enough to wipe away those instincts any time soon.
please don't bring freudian psychoanalytic theory into this
Why? Both Carl Jung and Freud were pioneers in the field of psychology, and we wouldn't even be here discussing sexuality today if it weren't for them.
it is almost categorically impossible to falsify that tripartite model of the psyche, and more importantly, it is very difficult to spot "instinct" when it comes to human social phenomena.
Freudian theory is openly mocked in the field today, it's basically never worth alluding to or bringing up
why is normalizing lgbt through education somehow fighting against "instinct"
are we suddenly all cavemen or something?
mean people are gonna be mean anyways, but we can at least normalize lgbt people to those who aren't mean. if you give up on efforts because the results weren't 100% immediately, then what's the point in doing anything at all?
racism is being taught as bad in schools. it won't stop people who may already be racist, but it definitely prevents others from becoming racist.
It's because your opinion doesn't make much sense.
Classes like these could help gay and trans kids figure themselves out sooner than they would on their own, if they even would at all. And that can literally save lives, especially for trans kids. And for everybody else, real knowledge of LGBT issues will help them accept their gay and trans peers.
I'm gonna repeat: LGBT education quite literally saves lives, and no, it can't be comprehensively covered in a week. Shit's nuanced.
It's just pshe now which focuses on shit like sex drugs and now lgbt lessons.
If you wanna talk scientifically respected aspects of personality, even the Big Five model will almost always put you at a high level of neuroticism if you're gay/trans. Granted that may be due to social pressures, but Freud's description of the id being instinct falls in line with people being predisposed to not liking people who go against the id.
except "going against the id" is almost impossible to identify with complex social behaviors. if it was - sociology would merely be a branch of freudian psychoanalysis applied to groups.
... aren't these supposed "instinctual prejudices" a good argument FOR education then?
Ok, instead of just saying I'm wrong, why not go into detail about the sociology of sexuality? I feel like I've provided adequate explanations for the reason behind not liking LGBT'ers but all you guys are saying is "You're just wrong because you are."
Assuming it's going to work like other subjects it's going to have 2 or 3 classes which you get once a week.
sounds good to me, getting it every day might get tiresome for students
i didn't say you're wrong because i am not entirely sure what you mean by "instinct" and, consequently, what you mean by "going against the id". i merely said that it does not seem to me that this blanket statement can adequately describe the complexities of opposition to homosexuality and the upsetting of the link between sex and gender.
first explain to me what you mean by instinct, and what you mean by going against the id. surely, you do not mean that the only reason LGBT folks aren't widely accepted is because they go against some vague instinctual biological imperative that quantifies all social interactions?
elaborate on your point before i can go into any detail about what i possibly find wrong with what you're saying, so that i do not accidentally argue against a strawman of your position and we both don't waste our time. who knows, we might even agree - what i have a problem with here is the reduction of complex interactions into a concept as simple and vague as "instinct".
Yeah but racism isn't a part of the id. It's usually a pressure from your parents teaching your ego to dislike people of different colours. But sexuality is something different entirely. Wanting to have sex is a basic human instinct, and that *is* something that would fall into the id, and going against that kind of instinct would draw dislike from pretty much any human because they're born wanting to mate.
I think none of you know how these classes work it's not going to be comprehensive at all, it's just going to tell shitheada that being trans is aight and teach a few facts.
Who actual gives a fuck the classes are designed to explain to shitheads that other sexaualitys races being trans and all that is all right and being discriminatory can get you fucked
uh, no? i personally have never felt this drive and know of people who have gone their entire lives not feeling it very strongly, yet some of them still turn out to hate "those goshdarn faggots ruining our sacred traditions and families". this phenomenon cannot be reduced to a biotruth, and your interpretation of it clearly does not account for such situations.
are you arguing against homosexuality or these classes i literary have no clue anymore
something tells me you may want to step back for a breather for ten minutes
