Brexit is teaching Britain its true place in the world

I don't think you understand. Scandinavia was never part of Europe either, it's just a tiny island off the coast of it.
You say The Brits like we're completely unified, as if the referendum was a 48/52 split. This is the most divisive & controversial issue of the last century, and the one with the most impactful constitutional effects. And with the loonies in charge, am I not allowed to blame the government for making a dog's breakfast out of it all? You can share the blame on the dodgy demagogues, the rise of inflammatory & unsportsmanlike conduct in politics, the raving bollocks about the EU spread out by the tabloids, and the inglin number one mentality - but by god, the government has been complicit dipping their dicks in all of these wills, repeatedly refusing to pull out and save face.
As someone who has supported remain and has generally disagreed with the actions of the last few governments, I can definitely blame them for repeatedly screwing up:
Cameron promising a referendum solely for short-term political gains.
Cameron leaving everything but the question in the referendum vague as hell. No mention on how much of a majority either side should have.
Cameron (and later May) repeatedly stating that austerity policies have ended, despite continuing them, and failing to improve living standards under their premiership. On top of this, with Cameron openly supporting remain, fuelled the idea that a leave vote could become a protest vote against the government.
Cameron promising to see on the results of the referendum, only to immediately resign after it.
May treating a 48/52 result as a supreme mandate to do as she wishes
May indulging in & harbouring the Remoaner-type rhetoric.
If this whole matter remained calm, civil, and courteous we could've peacefully managed our position for the future, even if we had a more sensible Brexit. Letting the government have free reign to drive us off a cliff has completely damaged a decent standing in the world and any semblance of a reputation.
The people in charge have ruined our decent standing in the world and our representation and we're not even out of the EU yet.
unsportsmanship conduct
If it wasn't for the last few governments we wouldn't be in this mess in the first place.
Think we can probably blame the government for continuing to walk into the trapped hallway instead of checking if this really is the right way to go or not.
I feel particularly bad for Scotland tbh. My father is Scottish and I went to school there so I'm a little biased but still.
Scottish Referendum: Westminster government threatened Scotland about EU membership. A lot of people voted to stay in the UK largely because of this, as to them having EU membership was more important than not being tacked on to the rest of the UK.
Some years later: 'hey let's have a referendum on whether or not to leave the EU entirely now!'
Out of the 4 UK Countries (I know Northern Ireland is technically not a country but whatever), Scotland had the highest proportion of votes to stay in the EU with every electoral area in Scotland voting in a majority to stay in the EU, but they are being taken out of the EU now anyway in a legally non-binding referendum.
A lot of Scots feel quite rightly pissed off that Westminster threatened them over EU membership if they went independent and then decided to pull them out of the EU with the rest of the country only a few years later. I can see why some Scottish people feel like Westminster stabbed them in the back.
