Addictive Personality Syndrone isn't a passed but learned trait. Its common to think that alcoholism, for instance, is herditary but its not. There is some discussion about there being an activated set of genes that enable addiction more easily but its not conclusive.
It's not genetics, it's epigenetics. DNA is tightly wound but parts of it are unwound and unpacked when the cell needs to view that segment of the DNA to make a protein or something. In people with addictions, the DNA sequences that correlate with addiction are more likely to be unwound and so you have your cells making more of the pleasure inducing neurotransmitters that will lead to someone getting more easily addicted. I can guarantee most of us, even us who aren't addicts, have these same genes but they haven't been activated by chemical use or behavior. This is because our ancestors didn't partake in this behavior or were exposed to the chemicals. There's a really good podcast I heard in one of my genetics courses about a mother mice raising and nurturing the offspring of other mice that had neglectful ancestors and this really explains it much better than I can but I unfortunately can't find it. I'm not going to go more into it, I finished my genetics minor coursework a year ago and this thread isn't really about that, also I'm watching Narcos: Mexico
Someone with a powerful voice, intellect, and improvisational skills please read a few of these and upload. pretty pleaseeeeeeeeeee
revive the silly voices thread
I wanted to do emails originally but smurfy suggested the google doc and I'm not sure if people would just trust sending an email to some rando forum member. All the responses have been a mixed bag for me imo. Some of you guys are completely unhinged while others are more sobering. ------------------------------- I voted Leave and I'm glad. The EU and its corporatist stuff needs to end, look how we couldn't even stop their copyright reform, and people want to trust that system even more, just stop. UN Migration Pact is a scam and we all know it, just an excuse to keep our wages low. There's 3 or so billion poor people, how the fuck does taking them in even make a dent in that statistic, such a waste of taxpayers money. Leave my guns alone faggots i wish posts whining about how leftist fp is were bannable under "why reply". if everyone who complained about how right leaning fp was actually cogently argued in favor of right wing policies, including the people sending in confessions about how much they hate polidicks, it probably wouldn't be so lopsided. there is a twisted irony about the "personal responsibility" team who hates self-entitlted snowflakes whining about how its everyone elses fault that their ideas are unpopular. Without that wall and the threat of more caravans which we know with the global economy looking as if its going to collapse and climate change, the border is going to be turned into a war zone. Guaranteed. fp buys into the repub anti-hillary propaganda too hard. pelosi, too. neither of them were/are the best candidates for their positions, but the eagerness of fpers to virtually offer them up as sacrifice is naive at best, revealing of latent sexism at worst. transgender people make me uncomfortable. i realize its a failing on my part and i dont go out of my way to mistreat or misgender them but its true i wanna lick trump to see if he really tastes like a cheeto tbh
My political sense is fairly bad and underdeveloped because I travelled a lot growing up and the one place we settled in, politics didn't matter too much because the PM was so hilariously corrupt that it wasn't worth discussion. I just know I was taught in school that fascism=bad and communism=bad thanks to thorough history books, so I guess I was fairly centrist the last few years because both sides could be fairly convincing to my dumb empty-headed ass at times. However, Trump has caused the right to show their true colours in just about every region, and I see nothing but overgrown children throwing shitfits, avoiding facts for their own beliefs and good christ don't get me started on the fake news stuff. About 75% of the people from the Gamergate era I followed thinking it was still a good movement have become a part of what feels like these sociopathic shitflingers who just want to start shit because it's funny "own the libs" and never actually want to seriously debate outside of showing "interesting" stuff. They claim they want people to see the truth but sitting on the top of my fence, I'm recoiling so hard from the toxicity that I've fallen into the grass on the left, ass-up. I'm still fairly uneducated on politics and prefer not to talk openly about my beliefs, but I wanted to get that off my chest. I don't really have a point I want to make, I don't post at all in polidicks. My political compass quiz results are moving more to the left with each passing year, and my friends share the continually left shifting belief. I know some people don't like centrists for not "taking the obvious side" but know from me that it simply comes from being raised totally neutral and having been told that both sides are bad if gone too far, but I see more people on the right "gone too far" than on the left, though there's some far-left FPers I'm a lil disgusted with. That's all for this nonsense ramble, I think. You know what urks me. when the bbc says 'asian gangs' but me and my family and everyone else around me knows that really means muslim, like how politically correct is my country getting Centrist that fell onto the left grass again, I just wanna confess one last thing that I'm completely supportive of LGBT since I'm part of it myself and I know people for each of those letters personally that are amazing and supportive and deserving of support in return. I wish people would just leave other people alone, and leave individual human beings outside of the political climate. I feel like some people on the right are obligated to attack LGBT folk without giving them a chance to know them, ~but it's okay because Milo Yianoppolis is gay~ HURRRR FUCK YOU ASSHOLES neck yourselves if you do this. Everyone is different and you might have your biases but at the very least try to hear them out before you make assumptions. Reading FP and other forms of social media these days fills me with a really deep dark depression I haven't felt since the time I was truly alone in my childhood. I believed, once upon a time, that humanity could learn from it's mistakes and that we could have a future, that the mistakes of our forefathers would lead us to a brighter today and an even brighter tomorrow; this belief kept me alive and kept me going. The recent goings on however have showed me that humanity might be truly incapable of learning, and that all of our accomplishments as the beautiful species we are will be rendered naught as our final scream on this god-forsaken planet registers into whatever distant census of dead civilizations exists, caused by war or whatever some-such atrocity caused because people dislike another beings skin color, think they get to dictate each-other's personal lives and decisions, or believe the 'bad guys' and 'the enemy' and the omnipresent 'other' is coming to 'get them'. Sentiments that once defined the proponents of slavery in our country's distant past, and the thinking that got the Nazi party their infamy, is now not only seemingly acceptable in American discourse, it can even be expected. I have no advice, I follow no political party (primitive tribe would be a better descriptor for them, seeing how their proponents act in public spaces versus each-other), I simply weep for the future I grow increasingly concerned that we will never have. The human future won't be white, it won't be straight, it won't be capitalist or communist or whatever idiotic system you believe solves all of your excessively individual problems; our future will be human, and we all need to rejoice in our humanity to get there. We have achieved great things in a cosmic blink of an eye, in a vast universe otherwise seemingly devoid of life to our tiny look at it, and we owe it to ourselves and all of existence to persevere and get ourselves to the stars, not squabble and scream and fight and war over such useless issues as whether or not specific human beings get the same rights as every other human being, or how to properly handle the exchange of increasingly temporary and ephemeral goods. I can't stand the autistic cheeto in charge of the US but i do wish he would close the border and install security. The biggest practitioners of identity politics are conservatives and republicans. while(codeblock){ print("stop writing these in code it hightlights weird words \n also sorry for the shitpost TIA"); } I think they're easier to read than in quotes tbh The way a lot of people can't see the hypocrisy with doing to trans people, the same things the previous generation and bible thumpers did/do to gay people is absolutely nuts, and honestly happens oddly often in what's supposed to be a "highly biased liberal hivemind" we call facepunch.
You don't become an alcoholic hereditarily like you get a detached earlobe.
Christ, why are so many of these confessions so fucking edgy.
I'm a trans woman and while i like the FP trans community. A lot of others are straight up mentally unstable and honestly the kind of people i'd avoid in real life. I would honestly chose to be around the FP transphobes as long as they didn't misgender me, instead of the mentally unhiged trans people i had the misfortune to meet. Sorry for existing.
Because they're opinions that people specifically don't want their names attached to, that would skew it towards highly aggressive tones
greater internet fuckwad theory holds true https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/112373/aaced59e-eef7-4961-b475-48ffc52ecba9/4fc.jpg
It's no wonder they don't post if that's what they truly believe.
To the right-leaning posters who complain that they can't post because FP is a liberal echo chamber, you're the only ones with the power to fix that. Provide the different angle, engage in argument. FP isn't T_D, you won't get banned for having the wrong opinion. The only thing is, be intelligent about it. Argue factually and in good faith. There are several conservative posters on here who are reasonable people, and they tend to encourage thoughtful discussion.
Bit of an open confession I guess. I think freedom of speech is a very important right, universally not just in the states. However I feel that there should be repercussions or consequences for those that would use free speech to express ludicrousy beyond that of even hate speech. The people that use positions of authority and political power to tout global warming isn't real are an immediate example of people abusing this right to misinform voters on an issue that will directly lead to human extinction if not combated within the century. The science is out there, so you can't challenge this and say "well we just need better education etc, etc" no, no. The factual statistical information directly linking human pollutants to the increase of Co2 levels, wildlife extinction, sealevels rising, the melting of the arctics, is not something you can just say is fake news or false. It is digestible information that can be easily understood by anyone with basic understanding of the greenhouse effect and how to read a fucking graph. Some number like 96% of all environmental scientists over the world have largely confirmed in uniform agreement that we are heading towards an extinction event within 150 years if we do not curb our carbon output within the next few decades. The end of civilization as we know it will be because of some old bastards that won't even live to see the 2030's have manufactured a lie that millions of Americans dumbfoundedly believe in, because clean coal or some retarded garbage.
This thread is FUCKING GOLD

I don't see an end to the political situation in the US. I see it escalating and getting worse. It worries me. I'm not a Democrat by any sense of the word, but as a sexual minority I'm kind of lumped in with them. I wish I had another alternative. The closest I can get is the Dem Socialists and that's essentially just throwing my opinion in the trash at that point. I see armed conflict between the sides in our future and I think that the left will lose, simply because they are neither equipped to fight, nor are they willing to strike first. Because of that, I think they will lose and people like me will be erased from the US one way or another. It's not just me I'm worried about either. MY sister is special needs, and I only see things getting worse for her. I am afraid for both of us. This one's a big oof.
Yeah, but guy also mentioned the mentally ill and retardation. Mental illnesses are probably very polygenic and with rather low penetration, but that doesn’t mean they have “nothing to do with genes”. IQ is also very much heritable (and many syndromes/illnesses that result in retardation are genetic), so yeah, maybe you don’t want to make your argument against eugenics on that basis. I also doubt there’s no genetic basis for alcoholism, but let’s that one slip by. Either way, just because the heritability of something doesn’t come down to a single gene, doesn’t mean it has nothing to do with genes. As we parse more and more genomes with big data, chances are more and more disorders will have their genetic basis established. So maybe make a humanitarian argument instead, or perhaps point out that probably no one is walking around with zero pathological genes.
A number of common mental illnesses have well known basis in genetic inheritance, the big five here being autism, bipolar, adhd, schizophrenia, and moderate to major clinical depression. The first study to discover the genetic link was observed in 2013 with a sample study of about 30,000 people.
I'm late to the party here but two things I think the writer is missing Nobody colonizes unless it's profitable , so it's inherently exploitative. Colonizing a country on the basis that "it's a shithole anyway" isn't going to fly in a western democratic country where the people have a say in it and some morals to uphold. The assumption that the end of colonialism was also the end of exploitation. I think it's pretty clear that colonialistic influence never ended to keep the oil and imports flowing, so you can't use the oppressive post colonial regimes as an example of how badly the countries do "on their own". Such countries might have been awful in terms of quality of life before colonialism, but every country once was. Being exploited and oppressed by imperialists is very difficult for a country to recover from and develop and prosper, even if they exploitation stopped there. Simple. They claim education has leftist bias or is straight up indoctrination. Those kinds of people value "common sense" over book smarts anyway. As for voter suppression I guess they can just claim that they're being suppressed as well. Without any evidence but who needs that.
I deserve that, but it's not me. I'm not an "own the libs" kinda guy, I just have a deep searing hatred for all conservatives
Not only should every American have their gun seized, but all Americans who are found to currently own guns should be executed. This would weed out most of the Republicunts who are ruining this country Low-key hope for civil war to kill all those white people of the heterosexual-empire The US could do with another civil war. Fix that shithole of a country from the inside Well that’s horrifying. Still reading other responses against my better judgement.
I swear people who are willing to show prejudice towards a certain group because of experiences weren't "made" that way, they just want an excuse to reaffirm their own opinions of other people. I've dealt with a lot of annoying, LGBT assholes (mostly from the L and B), my experiences with a lot of devout Muslims and Christians were terrifying as fuck, and the people who have given me the most issues in life from bullying to various forms of straight up abuse were white and latino dudes. Even after all that, I don't shit on any of these groups as if they're all like this. I have no issues making some really offensive jokes at the expense of literally anyone, even people like myself. But even after all of that, I still can't bring myself to harbor a genuine for people based on something so arbitrary such as race or sexuality.
First impressions matter a lot. I used to be pretty prejudiced against LGBT people, but over time and with experience, realized that I'd been wrong, and would never be able to harbour such prejudices against any sort of arbitrary group these days. The first LGBT person I met, when I was 14, was a classmate who tried to molest and physically assault me (Emphasis on tried to, he was a manlet in comparison to me), the second (at that same age) was a girl who I ended up befriending, and while she was a good person, she was the opposite of goodie-two-shoes me, smoked, already sexually active, party girl, and couldn't decide for the life of her whether she was lesbian or bi. In my limited life experience and knowledge, I knew there were two different opinions on gay people, either they're good and need to be treated the same as everybody else, or they're weird and different and bad. With the examples life had put before me, I picked the latter. The same can be applied to any minority(or group in general), collective stereotypes usually come from the actions of a few individuals within, and while they may be true for some, they're definitely not true for everybody. Until somebody can run into enough people of said group who are pleasant to interact with and defy the stereotypes they're portrayed as, no amount of policing speech, moralizing, calling them bigots, punching them in the face or wishing that they get executed, is going to make them drop their prejudices. It'll just do the exact opposite.
The amount of people here who openly advocate genocide when devoid of responsibility or association with their view is fucking horrifying.
Yeah I can empathize with that, but do you know how exhausting it is as someone in any marginalized group to be surrounded by people who treat you shittily and be told "no no, don't fight back, that'll only make them madder at you" when we live in a society that deitizes individualism and sticking up for yourself against bullies? Especially when that "sticking up for yourself" shtick is coopted by the same people who cross their arms and clutch their pearls when you tell them to leave you alone? Anyone who likes Rambo or Western movies about loners who drift around in a hostile world that seeks to eat them alive but despises the gays because they're different is a hypocrite and an idiot
I've quoted this bit by MLK many many times, but it's always ridiculously relevant "I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season." Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."
I'm sorry you had such awful experiences and I understand how you would feel that way. However, I specified "willing" prejudice. I know people with limited experience are going to have certain views. What I'm talking about is people who know better than that, but still want a reason to mistreat other people. And trust me, I've dealt first hand with people like that, didn't matter how many of "the good ones" took care of them, were well-behaved, were well-articulate, we were still subhumans doing our job like a "good nigger" is supposed to do.
Of course, it's something I've been through myself. My point wasn't to be passive when you as an individual are targeted (In fact, I'd argue the exact opposite, in a real-world environment your safety is more important than educating people), but that when people spew their opinions at the dinner table, with friends, online, at a rally, literally wherever, you've got a lot more leeway with how you handle it and how you treat them. Activism and debate, online or not, are supposed to help spread a viewpoint (in this case the viewpoint that minority groups aren't so different from the majority), and by actively shunning, insulting or attacking anybody who opposes or even disagrees with the slightest aspect of said viewpoint, repels everybody who doesn't already agree away from the ideals that are trying to be spread because the one spreading them looks like an immature angry twat. Nobody calling me a bigot on the internet, or saying that people who held the views I used to were scum helped me grow in any way. Making four new friends and a healthy dose of self-relflection did more than a thousand angry twitter rants ever could.
