I hate to burst your bubble, but your fucking wrong about evangelical christians. The idea that aids is a sovereign consequence for being gay is directly tied to a fundamentalist view that a whole bunch of the terrible shit that happens in the world - from natural disasters to famine to plague - is direct punishment from god for sinning. This isn't something they just pulled out their ass either - this is literally how petty yahweh is throughout the entire Old Testament. There is a reason less fundamentalist evangelicals de-emphasize the OT so much - it stands in direct contrast to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, while it is true that, as far as I know, nobody other than the WBC church has ever stood outside funerals with signs that proclaim "god hates fags," you will not find a fundamentalist church in the country that does not teach a literal view of the Old Testament, including the verses that state that homosexuality is an abomination. Their treatment of gay people proceeds as such from that worldview, including what they chose to support on a political level. That is why they support an end to AIDS research - because in their view, it doesn't matter one bit whether gay people die horrible deaths from AIDS. All that matters is that gay people turn from their "sin" before they die, otherwise god will torture them for eternity.
