"When during the campaign, I would say 'Mexico is going to pay for it,' obviously, I never said this, and I never meant they're gonna write out a check, I said they're going to pay for it. They are," he said as he prepared to depart the White House for the southern border. But in April 2016, Trump's campaign outlined the steps he would take to compel Mexico to pay the US "$5-10 billion" to fund a border wall -- a plan that relies largely on threatening to bar undocumented Mexican immigrants in the United States from wiring money to relatives in Mexico. "It's an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year," the memo said. Using a broad interpretation of the post-9/11 USA Patriot Act, Trump wrote in the memo that he would threaten to issue new regulations that would compel money transfer companies like Western Union to verify a client's identity and legal status before authorizing a wire transfer. Trump now claims his renegotiated trade deal with Mexico and Canada would result in Mexico "indirectly" paying for the wall. But the US-Mexico-Canada trade deal has not yet been approved by Congress and even the perceived benefits of its passage would not amount to a Mexican -- direct or indirect -- payment of the border wall. Whatever economic benefits the trade deal delivers would be reflected in financial benefits to companies and higher wages for some individuals, not in any immediate financial boon to the US government. And White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney noted Sunday that border wall construction "requires appropriation" of federal funds from Congress, even if financial benefits from the trade deal help cover the cost. Nonetheless, Trump claimed: "Mexico is paying for the wall indirectly, and when I said Mexico will pay for the wall in front of thousands and thousands of people, obviously they're not gonna write a check. But they are paying for the wall indirectly many, many times over by the really great trade deal we just made." The prospect of Mexico paying for a wall became a 2016 campaign rallying cry for his supporters, but has come under fire in the second year of his presidency as Trump seeks $5.7 billion in border security funding, which includes funding for the construction of a wall or steel barrier. Mexican officials have consistently rebuffed the idea that their government would pay for a wall. Remarking on the trade deal's prospects for congressional approval, Trump predicted Thursday that Democrats could hold up its passage. "It's a trade deal, it has to be approved by Congress. It probably will be other than maybe they even hold that up because they want to do as much harm as they can only because of the 2020 presidential election," he said. I can't wait for the inevitable "I never said that I was going to make America better! I said I was going to Make America! Great, Again?". Its beating a putrid puddle that once was a dead horse by now, but shame on anyone who actually believed him and continues to believe him.
“Those times I said that thing? Yeah sorry that was my twin brother, Flonald Trump. He’s not even really my twin brother, just my coffee brother.”
If he thought of this earlier he could have called the wall a metaphor for border security.
I would say 'Mexico is going to pay for it,' obviously, I never said this This is it. This is peak stupidity. He makes a statement, and then one word later makes a completely 100% perfectly contrarian statement. He has the cognitive brain function of a toddler.
Probably trying to dodge accountability for his questionable shite, but I sometimes wonder if he has a personality disorder he's trying to hide. "A Streetcar named Covfefe."
This is horrible and all but think of the precedent this is setting. Future presidents can lie about literally and actually anything and people will cheer it on.
but I thought the wall was a metaphore, concrete, steel, the solution to world hunger and china? could it be that its whatever they want it to be whenever they want it instead of a 2000 mile long 30 foot tall barrier?

Call me optimistic, but I doubt they'll have the same effect. Can you imagine men like Mike Pence pulling this kind of shit? Trump's cult of personality will likely die with him.
Don't write this off as stupidity, he knows what he's doing. This is a malicious attempt at covering his own tracks. He's gaslighting the American People.
Trump is the kind of person who loses a bet then says "WE DIDN'T SHAKE ON IT"
Nuh uh you can't impeach me I have an anti impeachment shield MOM TELL HIM HE CANT IMPEACH ME
I'm not a psychologist and even if I was I'd have to personally examine the fatass face-to-face to make an official declaration of diagnosis, but pretty fucking clear the guy has a massive case of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and he makes no attempt to hide it. Everything always has to be about him and there is no social rudeness barrier he will not Kool-Aid-Man charge through to make the situation about him, he lies reflexively without hesitation, his ego has armor plating a single neutron's width in thickness and he takes any slight as a declaration of war, and he is insanely quick to trust anyone who indulges his ego and tells him he's a really great and special guy which makes him tremendously easy to manipulate. All of this has been out in the open for at least a decade if not three. Trump's known for being a shitty conman who talks big, to anyone paying attention who didn't catch MAGAbola.
Imagine believing Mexico would pay for the wall because Trump said it, then he springs that it’s figure of speech and now you have to pay for said wall.
They don't care. They've already made a GoFundMe.
The wall is a weird one, I can totally see republicans running with it as a central policy for the rest of time considering how well it resonates with their idiotic voters. Say Trump actually manages to get it built- the next democratic president is obviously going to drop maintenance funding on such a useless vanity project, so the wall will become a derelict, crumbling pile of shit on the border. Republicans could have images of this wreck front and centre in all of their propaganda- claim it shows the dems don't value border security- campaign on the promise that they will "make the wall great again". Say Trump never manages to build a border wall- Now every republican candidate can run on the promise of completing their spiritual liege's finest work, the project everyone was cruelly denied by the evil democrats and their damned "fiscal responsibility~". I'm willing to bet that in a few decades, the crumbling life-support-aided-carcasses of all the rich out of touch cunts currently filling the party will still be screaming for a border wall as America starts to properly face the immense fallout from climate change.
It was just a rhetorical device, y'all. https://twitter.com/JuddLegum/status/1083390035754393600?s=19
Fox News reported that he crossed his fingers during the oath and said "No Impeachsies" while being sworn in. We're doomed...
"When during the campaign, I would say 'Mexico is going to pay for it,' obviously, I never said this, and I never meant they're gonna write out a check, I said they're going to pay for it. They are" Wh...I... ah...
ooh, lawyer speak
2016: Mexico will pay for the wall! 2019:I never said that Mexico will pay for it... 2020: What's a "Mexico"?
I can't even comprehend that sentence obviously because he's playing 4d chess /s
Is there a link to that page for verification?

A brief timeline of claims on the wall and how it would be funded: https://i.imgur.com/Bt8Bv9a.jpg He said Mexico would literally pay for the wall significantly more often than not.
fucker is using the "national emergency" as a way to gain leverage. now tell me; how is this fact not grounds for impeachment?
What's interesting is the fact that he had the better part of two years in which he could have passed a bill to get his wall with no effective opposition, but he didn't start actually demanding Congress do so until it was possible for the opposition to block him. He's deliberately trying to make himself seem embattled to justify making dictatorial directives.
The real mexico was in our hearts the whole time
