Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the only House Democrat to vote against a bill to fund the government and end the partial government shutdown on Wednesday.
I mean... fair. Don't compromise on morals
This is bad.
The bill to end the shutdown should fund all the things it funded before the shutdown. Otherwise AOC is just using it for leverage the same way the GOP is.
If she wants to campaign to end ICE wait until she's not holding the entire country hostage to do it.
I love that dems are going further left and AOC is a great thing, however she is incredibly new to it all and still has a huge amount to learn.
I hope she continues to be tough in these issues, however for something like this, come on now AOC, lets just not. Opening the gov is a win.
I get that the actions of ICE have been shitty, but I don't really understand why one would want to get rid of an agency like ICE alltogether. Aren't they just an immigration service? Most countries have one...
Good for her, but yeah I'm a bit conflicted here.
Please try to find a way to get a full title to fit instead of accidentally creating click bait, thanks dude.
Oh okay so apparently the US has split one immigration service into three different agencies since 2003
why
I love AOC, but she should consider the 800,000 federal employees. This was a bad call and feels like insincere political grandstanding.
I'm not gonna blame her for not wanting money to go to an agency she doesn't like and has explicitly stated she does not support. She's sticking to it.
On the other hand, when you're fighting for something in politics, you do need to keep an eye on how things affect your image. That's not to say be a coward like many politicians are, but if you can take an action that will accomplish nothing but make you look bad, to almost everyone, you need to not do that thing. If there was a chance that this action could lead to abolishing ICE, then yeah, maybe that's different. But all this is doing is giving fuel against her, in a situation where there is absolutely no chance of this action leading to the abolishment of ICE. Even if I agreed with her using the shutdown in this way, this is a bad idea from a strategic standpoint.
In what scenario would ICE not receive funding at this time though? It kind of seems like a very unrealistic and useless move that gives the impression that you don't care about the thousands of federal workers
I like AOC, but campaigning for ICE to be abolished should be a separate political goal imo
also, going after it's funding is weird to me and seems kind of 'unprofessional', if you know what I mean. Doesn't it still have tasks that would need to be taken over by other agencies? Campaign for it to be abolished if you don't want it to exist.
Admirable under any other circumstance, but now isn't the time to be making a bold statement. Our immigration system is fucked, yes, but getting the country back on it's feet after a month+ shutdown should be first on the chopping block.
It's worth noting that this bill had no chance of being voted for whatsoever, she wasn't voting for starting the government back up, she was making a clear statement that things need to change. Not sure what that changes, but it's not like she's in practice denying or giving anyone anything. It's also not up for discussion at this point: ICE is rotten to the core. This isn't like Trump fighting for a wall, she's drawing a line against demonstratively bad practices, in reality and not in the fantasty land made up by the GOP.
It also really doesn't help that we hold people like AOC to a far, far, far higher standard than literally any other politician.
I would be saying the same thing about any other Democrat that did the same thing.
I feel like we need to remember AOC knows this bill won't survive and knows this can get her stance on ICE out in the headlights pretty fast and begin the efforts at combating it.
I have no doubt if it came down to the wire she would vote yes.
It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't come out that they were separating children and parents by the thousands, and often impersonate police officers
ICE is a fairly new organization. Its literally younger than Spongebob Squarepants. They're a feel good money drain implemented after 9/11 to placate anti-immigration types.
its a no consequence vote like Rand Paul shutting the government down for 6 hours that one time
well I'm not excusing that, I was wondering how ICE's awful actions are inherent to the idea of having an immigration service
I was under the impression that ICE was the immigration service of the US and had a role similar to the immigration service of my own country (the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service), but it turned out that ICE is actually one of three (!!! seriously wtf) agencies that has a task related to immigration and that it is more of a law enforcement agency than an immigration service. So I now I do think it should be abolished
it was ironically created because people had gotten disgusted with the INS, but hey people's memories are fairly non existant these days.
For a country that is more pro-small government than average it sure has a thing for creating several dozens of federal agencies, many of which could probably just be combined into one or abolished
The breaking up of agencies is actually on purpose to contain costs and prevent mission creep. We unfortunately, keep adding mission creep.
This is true, but before Immigration and Customs Enforcement their duties were done by the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) and other agencies. Getting rid of ICE would be entirely symbolic, their duties would just be transferred to another agency, probably back to Customs and Border Protection (the successor to INS).
What has AOC even done besides make Republicans angry
The only news I hear of her is "AOC did nothing at all and Republicans are mad about it".
Republicans love to harp on about small government but when it comes to law enforcement, I challenge you to name every single federal law enforcement agency you know, You wouldn't even get half of them. At least one of them sounds like the name and plot of an anime.
I don't approve, this on the same tier of when republicans tried to use the budget to defund medicare and the ACA, the budget shouldn't be a tool to push an agenda.
While I agree it shouldn't be used this way, it is and probably will be for a long time. Democrats can't take the high road anymore, the system only rewards gross shit.
She was just fucking elected for the first time ever. And the government has been shut down since the new congress came in session. What do you expect her do while the Republicans are holding the entire country hostage over funding a useless monument to xenophobia?
the longer the shutdown continues, the greater the chance people are gonna spend the last of their pennies on a yellow hi-vis vest so
You're asking that as if she's been in for over a decade now
like that's just ridiculous to ask a fresh-blood politician do have done shit right out of the gate
