Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was the only Democrat to vote 'no' on a bill to...

raw unabashed socialism to the point where even your average liberal is shocked shitless that someone's actually standing up for all the marginalised voices on the left for once
This is apparently a common misconception from those of us that are not from the US, apparently there's a another governmental organization that also covers immigration, which could easily replace the ICE. Forgot the name though.
yeah, it's weird. In my country (and probably most European countries) the immigration service processes all applications for asylum, visas etc and the police and marechaussee just do the enforcement of the law. I've no idea why you would need a separate federal agency to specifically enforce immigration law
To be fair on that front, consider that your country is smaller than most U.S. states and has a population of about half a percent of the U.S. population.
I really like AOC, but this is a bad decision. It parallel's the same dumb logic Ted Cruz used to shutdown the government over the ACA.
The fact that she's genuinely politically left, instead of the U.S. version of "left," which is more just center-at-best.
Let's not abolish ICE and also not build a wall and respect our international borders. And let's also reopen the government so that people can go to work.
Bad call.
This is literally the entire point of shutting down the government lol, and everyone is playing right into his hands. He doesn't give a fuck about funding the wall, he cares about forcing the Dems into a position where, no matter what, they look bad to both the right, and their voters.
By refusing to vote on this bill, AOC now looks bad to both sides because she's holding her morals above all the federal workers that have been put out of work due to the GOP, and the GOP ONLY. The dems are not required to do everything it takes to get those workers back to work, since it is an artificial situation composed entirely by the GOP; those workers could be back to work at any time if the GOP would end stop playing with their lives, to achieve their political goals. The GOP put them out of work, not the Dems.
You are not everyone though. There's quite a few people, on Facepunch and even more off, that already have a history of shitting all over AOC for literally every little thing she does.
Hey fun fact literally every other country on the planet respects international borders without needing to build a great big wall. Unless you're now taking notes from what the Chinese tried centuries ago.
Choose your battles, AOC. Opening the government without wall funding is a win -- take it.
It's kinda easy weird how we put up with "pick your battles" when the battle in question is ending a gestapo organization.
I don't see the problem, it's not like she would have made a difference anyway. As long as the GOP keeps sucking Trump's dick they're not going to reopen the government, regardless of how the Dems vote. Might as well make a political statement while it can remain symbolic and not truly affect people.
Frankly, after watching what our government does in bashing politicians who voted to enact Article 50 every time they speak up against Brexit, I am very proud to see AOC sticking to her guns and her values. Had she not, they would use her support of this bill against her in future every time she attempts to get rid of ICE.
Our most immediate crisis is ending this shutdown. We're on a runaway train barreling towards a cliff right now. The 800,000 unpaid federal workers are the tip of the iceberg -- looming beneath the surface are critical threats to our economic stability and national security that could echo for years. I'm fully in support of overhauling our immigration services and eliminating the practices and organizations responsible for the humanitarian nightmare we've seen explode under Trump, but holding our nation hostage is just now how we should be approaching that.
It doesn't matter what she did here, it would just give them ammo. The GOP are masters of latching on to the most inane and trivial shit and twisting it until it fits their narrative.
The game of politics is one big Kafka trap. You are damned if you do, damned if you don't. In this case you might as well stick to what you believe in. It's like Dems who vote along with republicans to gain favour on the right, what they never seem to realise is: why vote for a Republican-like when you can have an actual republican.
Yeah, its how conservative politicians erode the welfare state. Make it bloated and inefficent, then claim it did t work to begin with, privatize, repeat.
