To be fair, throwing an egg at someone is also assault. This kid assaulted a senator and was not charged for it, likely because of the reaction to it. Punching the kid and holding him down can both be seen as a response to an assault on a sitting politician, and detaining him until police arrived. And because I know someone's going to say "Well he's a fascist, he deserved it," no, no he didn't. Unless he's out there beating the shit out of Muslims or something, then assaulting him is not the correct response to his bigotry. As a matter of fact, assaulting him is exactly what the shooter wants people to do. Respond to words with words and votes, the only time violence is an acceptable response is to violence, and as minor an assault as egging someone is, it's still an assault, and therefore violence.

"but he's smaller than him" sounds like the kid should've taken that into account before assaulting someone then.

Yeah, the reaction to it was over-the-top for sure, with 4 people pinning the kid down and nearly choking him out, but the kid assaulted a politician, responding to an assault by punching the person who assaulted you isn't unreasonable.

He was charged over a different assault. The protester in this case chose not to press charges, but in a case of assault as blatant as this, as far as I know any normal person would still have been charged with assault by the crown anyways, regardless of the desires of the assaulted.

Punching people is only legal or acceptable as self-defense. That is only when you or someone else is actively in danger. That doesn't apply here despite it being technically assault.
