ya a guy swerved into my brother and the cop thought my brother turned into him, even though the guy was following behind my brother and both statements said as much
see, humanity does in fact progress
What a stupid retarded decision to make based on aesthetics.
Yes? What evidence do you think you need to call the cops on a dangerous driver? You tell them where they are and then if a cruiser or highway patrol is available, they check it out. If they see the dude driving like a madman it's GG.
I think it’s fair to say that not having front registration plates on cars is a bizarre concept for everyone in the world except North Americans.
Also so many American registration plates have such complicated designs with pretty pictures, to the extent that they just seem counterintuitive. Some vanity Australian registration plates are almost nonsensical, but New Zealand and European plates tend to be very practical.
This is just absurd. It amazes me every single time how people don't get dash cams. It's seriously as obvious as it can get.
You're also 100% completely missing my point. It's as if you tried to miss my point. I'll repeat it once, at this point itt'l only be the third or fourth time I've stated it and I can't state it in any plainer language.
The police are not going to go and issue a ticket because you showed them dashcam footage of a tailgater riding your ass.
If a cop doesn't see it actually happen right infront of them they're not going to ticket someone for it. It's a waste of police resources. They'll smile and nod at your report, but that's about as far as it gets. The only time they're going to act on someone walking in with dashcam footage of a bad driver is when this footage proves a hit-and-run or some other crime of the sort.
Again, I run a dashcam personally, but that doesn't mean I'm going to go waste LPD's time reporting every incident of tailgating or speeding or whatever I see on the roads. They're not going to issue tickets for it, it's a waste of their time, and it's a waste of my own as well.
BC has always had them. Alberta too. Saskatchewan does as well AFAIK.
Indiana doesn't require it and I've never seen the need to require one. I wonder what the stats are on how actually useful the front plate does.
I live in Alberta and I can safely say that I rarely see a front mounted license plate. Licence plates | Alberta.ca
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_Canada#Mounting
I'm gonna say this isn't exactly a bad thing, patterns are easier to recognize then generic same plates with numbers.
They issue front plates.
Whether or not people mount them is apparently up to local regulations but they do issue them.
I know because every Alberta vehicle in BC has two plates. They have to.
Dude, I LIVE here. I have never had two plates and I've never been issued two plates and I've never had to mount a second plate when going to a province that requires two plates.
I'm not disputing your experience.
I'm saying every. single. Alberta. Plated. Vehicle in BC has two plates.
That's ALL i'm saying.
Aren't US vehicles also missing orange turn signals for aesthetic reasons as well? I think I saw a video about it a while back.
Kind of weird that, in a country where people rely so much on their car, aesthetics take precedence over road safety.
I've never seen a car missing them but a lot of people don't use them properly here
No, you're likely confusing it with the fact that in the US they don't have to split brake and indicators into two separate lights unlike in Europe.
They can use combination lights where the brake lights function like indicators as well (its fucking retarded and is easily confusing).
So you get blinking red brake lights at the rear which are used as indicators instead, its fucking retarded.
We have turn signals...
That's a baseless shitty statement
Dashcams are not legal in all states.
Aren't US vehicles also missing orange turn signals for aesthetic reasons as well? I think I saw a video about it a while back.
So they have red rear signals then? That's what I meant by my first statement.
In Canada and the US the rear signals may be amber or red. American regulators and other proponents of red rear turn signals have historically asserted there is no proven safety benefit to amber signals, though it has been recognized since the 1960s that amber turn signals are more quickly spotted than red ones. International proponents of amber rear signals say they are more easily discernible as turn signals, and US studies in the early 1990s demonstrated improvements in the speed and accuracy of following drivers' reactions to stop lamps when the turn signals were amber rather than red.
Doesn't seem that baseless to me. What would justify reluctance to a safety measure that's been proven to be efficient other than aesthetic concerns?
the sound the last dying front license plate makes:

I've never really considered that to be much of a safety issue (I mean, even if it's red it's still blinking, it should be obvious it's a turn signal) until I saw a US import VW Passat in the wild with a red rear turn signal. It was immediately much less noticeable at a glance it's a turn signal and I totally could buy it that it's much easier to miss than a blinking amber light. Of course if you actually look at it you know what it is, but for me at least my brain makes note of a blinking amber light much better than a red one when it's not directly in my line of sight.
One thing about US automotive lighting I kind of actually like is the sidemarkers. I wish they were more of a thing in Europe too since it's just additional positional information which never hurt anybody. Unfortunately the regulations on those are different in Europe so basically no automakers bother to include them in the European models since they might not even be certifiable.
That's weird, I lived in Alberta (Calgary) for 11 years and then Kelowna and now Victoria for a total of 12 years and I have never seen a front Alberta plate in my entire life. My parents never have either.
To see what @_Axel means here's a video on the subject by Technology Connections.

Yeah that's the video I saw!
to be fair the cops have been using license scanners for years and don't care about the physical plate as long as its machine readable
That’s a fair point, although I don’t think it works if everyone is driving around in cars with flower pattern plates. And at a medium distance, the graphic may not be distinctive.
Here in Australia most of the registration plates are simple, eg standard NSW plates are either black text on flat yellow background or black text on flat white background, while in Queensland they are red text on flat white background. Vanity plates do exist and most are simply another colour combination, eg my car’s plates are gold text on a flat black background. But some vanity plates do have complicated designs, although these are quite rare.
Looks better visually but it's really fucken stupid.
Can you imagine if you get rear ended and you have a rear facing camera, they hit you and then drive off in another direction where you can't catch their number plate at all.
horrific idea tbh
This literally happened to a relative of mine. Their car got practically totaled because of a truck that veered onto the wrong lane down a country road. The truck reversed like 200 meters away from my relative, headlights facing him the entire time, then turned around and went down another road.
The only reason they caught the guy is because he had front plates and could be identified based on those.
If someone says "they look ugly" then they're missing the point of having a god damn license plate in the first place. It's not meant to look good, it's a measure intended to make identifying your vehicle easier.
My 92 Mercedes did not have a front plate spot
