Clinton: 'China, if you're listening, why don't you get Trump's tax returns'

I saw a lot of noise about Trump's tax returns even during the election days and I'm genuinely curious: what exactly does having access or witness to these actually mean? Anyone with two cells to string together is already aware that he's a near pathological liar and a less than stellar individual to put it generously, so forgive my ignorance if I'm asking a silly question, but I genuinely don't understand what seeing these proves what most of us don't already know.

Having a paper trail to link all of the shit things he's done. The term "follow the money" is extremely applicable here.
