He must think a war towards the end of his first term will help him get re-elected.
For a rough summary of the past 24 hours: https://twitter.com/AaronMehta/status/1128648360947322880?s=20 This may or may not be just a bunch of sabre-rattling and pointless dickwaving (because, y'know, Trump), but even still. Scary.
The situation between us and Iran has been boiling for a long time. It's not because Trump is trying to win support for a favor of reelection, it's been going on hell when Bush was still in Office and picked up when Obama was in office.
The key difference is the president between Bush and Trump favored a diplomatic approach because war does no one any favors. Trump is undoing the historic diplomacy brought about by his predecessor.
At a meeting of President Trump’s top national security aides last Thursday, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan presented an updated military plan that envisions sending as many as 120,000 tro ops to the Middle East should Iran attack American forces or accelerate work on nuclear weapons, administration officials said. Don't you fucking do it
Iran struck a deal woth obama and the EU that was overall way better for us vs them. Trump is purposely tearing down all that work just to make a new boogeyman for the rightwingers to scream at and support trump. I mean look from Iran's position. You strike a deal with a country and suddenly that country elects a giant baby in office who throws his rattle at you and tears up the agreements. Iran is in the right to be pissed, they know they got the shorter end of the stick, and trump came in and wanted the entire thing for himself.
It was a win win situation for the Iran deal. They stop developing nukes, US lifts sanctions. Then trump came and fuck it all up
On one hand I really hope not, but on the other Trump is exactly the kind of person to see something that he thinks could help his chances and go for it even though it's guaranteed to result in the deaths of tens of thousands of people while further destabilizing the region.
What do you expect with Trump and Bolton holding a blowtorch to their toes.

Maybe Trump is hoping to enact war time law which allows him.tonstay as president until the war is over

I can't understand anyone who puts any verbs after "Trump". Trump doesn't DO anything. Not think, not act, not plan. That requires intelligence. He is guided by sycophants and will do anything to remain in power. Our national security adviser literally hates Iran and wants to completely overthrow the regime. I'm sure it was easy for him to convince Trump that a war will win him reelection.
Does anybody know which argument with a top UK general this tweet is referencing?
I mean in the end it's still Trump's fault for being so much of an idiot that he's easily puppeted by anyone that promises him power.
Its a vicious cycle He gets elected -> he appoints people who advise him -> people advise him -> he makes decision
We’re fucked, aren’t we?
Close to it. Lets be clear, if the executive branch wants a war to happen, it will happen. If that means they have to make a casus belli, they will and have before. And presidents are aware of the fact that the voting public doesn't like to "change horses mid-stream". If I even so much has hear the first syllable of "DRAFT", I'm running to Canada.
he can't, they've diverted all the money the pentagon has to the southern border.
This movie is going to be relevant again https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJU2qRg5zLI
That movie was probably some of the best political satire I've ever seen. The TV show it was based on is also great but the film was especially relevant and accurate.
A war would really backfire on him politically, and could spark an economic downturn.
See, as much as I hate a trans ban, I'm actually a little glad it's in play right now. Still don't support it, but yeah.
If blood is spilled, everyone should remember who's the real culprit.
i am struggling to understand what the US has to gain from a war in iran at the current moment, especially considering that they could just wait and let israel do the dirty work of starting a war, as they have the motive and have shown willingness to go on an offensive if they view it necessary. this doesnt make sense from any strategic or economic point of view, especially considering that iran definitely isnt dumb enough to assault the US military head on when they have shown restraint attacking israel even when they had a clear justifiable reason a few months back - and when they can only lose, as their situation is worse since that point in time due to sanctions. what a bizarre show of force. could this just be saber rattling?
Remember when everyone called hillary a warhawk, and that voting trump would keep the peace? Yeah...
Aw fuck my dad works at the embassy. He sent a text message to mom before all this came out that basically just said "all good here, don't worry."
Well North Korea didn't stop making nukes when we struck a deal, what made you think Iran would follow the same boat? Not a damn thing.
Sigh. Bolton pushing another bullshit narrative to get us into a war, just like Iraq in 2003, and everyone's either falling for it, or can't do anything to stop it
