I'd agree, but I've noticed that it often has the same effect as going to church wherein you have a community that is there for one another because you share the same values. In my experience, many of the people who are patriotic tend to be more charitable and gregarious.

Theodore Roosevelt personally felt that immigrants, upon arriving in the USA, should be given lessons on how to be 'American' - classes on English, mandatory Boy Scout meetings, etc etc. He believed that, through promoting the idea of American success through progress, immigrants would begin to see themselves less as Italian/English/Spanish/Mexican-Americans, and more as "Americans"

Jingoist policies only promote the idea that true "Americans" are dense assholes, thereby increasing foreign nationalism throughout the country. I've even begun to suffer from such effects, as I've begun view myself as a German-American, when previously I considered myself a mere American.
Shitty slogans/policies only serve to divide the nation in the long term, as we begin to humiliate ourselves internationally.
