The number of automatic weapons used in violent crimes before Firearms Owners' Protection Act was less than 30 in the previous 10 years.
You can buy an M16A1 surplus parts kit, an AR15 lower receiver, and easily convert it for less than $800.
So how is price an issue? It's not price, the fact is it's simply much easier to acquire a cheap stolen handgun or shotgun to commit a crime.

identify and confiscate (without compensation) over half of the registered handguns in
2001.
