[Breaking] Round Two: Jury does not indict officer in Eric Garner case

okay welp
From what I heard during the Darren Wilson stuff a prosecutor can choose to just ignore the grand jury and push for a trial anyway, so here's hoping that happens.
This is generally designed to avoid lengthy and expensive legal battles.
The outrageous thing about this is that the cop clearly performed an illegal action and choked an innocent man to death on video and he didn't receive any punishment. Not even a "hey pal, you're not supposed to strangle the citizens you're payed to protect". They just let him get away with murder, plain and simple. There's no debate in this one.
He'll be going to court for a wrongful death lawsuit that he will certainly lose, and the payout will probably bankrupt him.
Still should have been criminal charges but he won't get away scot-free.
What the hell. I remember seeing the video a long time ago. My dad also saw it and we talked about how crazy it was and how the police officer would definitely go to prison.
A month or so later he apparently isn't even indicted.
How do you look at that video, see him pulled to the ground by his throat after hardly resisting against the police, continue to be choked while face first on the ground with several officers on him while he says in a clearly struggling voice that he cant breathe, and then later die and say "nah man that's completely legit nothing wrong there."
I really didn't have much reaction to the Ferguson case but this is absolute horse shit.
This made me question how effective body cameras are actually going to be on police officers. I mean this was caught clearly on video and yet this guy still got off without an indictment. I feel as tho the problem itself is in the justice system at this point.

Just FYI, Garner was killed back in July, which makes this actually precede the Ferguson debacle. This was definitely a contributing factor to the tension that reached a climax with Michael Brown.
Wow. He literally strangled a defenseless person to death while he begged for his life and that's still not enough to get a grand jury indictment. It was even on camera, plain as day! Between the coroner's report and the video, I really don't understand what "sufficient evidence" would even look like.
At this point, I think it's obvious that we cannot trust prosecutors to do their jobs when it comes to holding police accountable. There needs to be an outside agency whose singular purpose is prosecuting police misconduct, and has no other conflicting interests. Law enforcement and prosecutors are just way too friendly with each other to be trusted to force accountability.

I'd say that we're better off having objective evidence either way, and if the justice system doesn't use it correctly, the public certainly would.

How about we stop rioting over Michael Brown and start making (peaceful) protests for this poor bloke?
It seems like it's all going to get a Hell of a lot worse before it gets any better.
Does it make me a hipster to say that I liked Psy when he released Right Now?
edit: wtf facepunch fucked up. I was posting in the Psy thread, not the "Police brutality" thread
It's obvious the cop didn't intend to kill him BUT that doesn't mean he should of put him in a choke hold. Cop fucked up and is going to have to pay.
So, why the fuck is he not indicted?
Do they state a reason for not indicting him?
So, chokeholds are banned by the NYPD as a means of forcing compliance.
An officer kills an unarmed, non-dangerous person with a chokehold, and he gets off due to lack of evidence? What the fuck kind of crock of shit is this?
How about we stop rioting over Michael Brown and start making (peaceful) protests for this poor bloke?
How about no? As bullshit as this is, people would/will exploit this like they did Brown's protests for more chaos.
[editline]3rd December 2014[/editline]
okay, i stand corrected and misinformed, they long since have started chaotic protests already
absolutely incredible that they get away with this shit, my heart goes out to the man's family

ONE TOWN where it ACTUALLY HAPPENED has had riots. There were peaceful protests across the country for Michael Brown. There are peaceful protests for Eric Garner. Why don't you participate if you're so concerned?

apparently i'm even more misinformed, then. goddammit.
After the unfortunate resolution of the Eric Garner case, it has become painfully apparent that lady justice isn't blind.

"..where HE WAS SELLING THINGS ILLEGALLY (pause to let it sink in..) cigarettesandsuchwhateverand the cops approached him."
ahaha holy shit how do these people fucking live with themselves
Did the entire grand jury consist of people tied to law enforcement or something? A grand jury consisting entirely of 2 year olds would have been better than this lot.

Comments on P1 are terrible. 0/10 would not recommend reading, ever. I read that site on the regular and I think what they say is batshit crazy

"Wow, those darn people protesting against police brutality might distract us from that tree covered in lights"
That's the most 'rich old white person' problem I've heard in a long time.
Also I love the emphasis she puts on how he resisted arrest when clearly all he did was slap the officers' arms away when they tried to grab him. Then the guy trying to make it sound like the cop didn't even actually put him in a chokehold as if it was some kind of "seatbelt" bulshit, like how do you think this man died?
Hopefully race can be left out of this to focus more on a corrupt system of law enforcement related political injustice.
Race is a huge aspect of the corruption and injustice in our legal system. You can't just ignore it.

Also that one guy in here is claiming that he had to be able to breathe if he said "I can't breathe," yet he seems to completely ignore the fact that the man literally died as a direct result of asphyxiation.
~automerge again goddammit~
The bad apples such as this cop do no good for the image of police forces, even when there are some that are legitimately trying to help people out whenever they can.
How about we stop rioting over Michael Brown and start making (peaceful) protests for this poor bloke?
In another universe, this would have been the catalyzing event. It just happened at the wrong time in the news cycle, and happened to not involve guns.

every time i look at p1 comments i start thinking to myself "are these guys retired and 60, or are they just rejected mall cops that believe they're sane?"
That's literal bullshit. It's there in the video. He put him in a blood choke, and a very shitty one at that. That constitutes lethal force in a lot of places, and it was in a situation that did not warrant that at all.
The carotid restraint (blood choke) is authorized in the SFPD (using SFPD as an example) use of force continuum, being surpassed only by lethal force. It stresses that if a carotid restraint is used, extreme care must be taken to ensure that the carotid restraint does not become a chokehold. This case seems like a clear case of negligence on the officer's part, and with such clear evidence, he should have been tried.
