I think EA is trying too hard to make Battlefield a CoD/competition killer, instead of focusing on making a 100% solid game, tbqh.
If you're talking about the multiplayer element then you're crazy.
If you're talking about the singleplayer element then who gives a fuck about singleplayer Battlefield.
where have you been for the last 5 years? facepunch isn't a "video game forum." it's a free somethingawful with gaming sub-forums
When the Gaming section and the News Section mainly post news about videogames, I can get that impression.
The only thing posted in the News Section is BBC everything else is videogame stuff. For fuck's sake we have a direct feed to steam.
oh okay. that seems weird but I trust you.

Well lets see. What has CoD been blamed for? I'm pretty sure Doom was an excuse used for why Columbine happened.
I honestly have no idea what points you're trying to make, at all, throughout this whole thread.

Holy shit, nice way to turn around and basically ignore the fact I was backing you up with the original point you made.
Or should I repost that for ya.
I can't tell that you're backing me up, because I'm so confused by your wording.
I was never impressed with id. They helped push PC gaming into a new genre but every game I've played by them felt empty similar to Brink's story line.
every single game of theirs pushed gaming into a new direction
the notable exception might be Doom 3 but what it lacked for direction in gameplay it made up with technological innovation
The game again sparked controversy throughout a period of school shootings in the United States when it was found that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who committed the Columbine High School massacre in 1999, were avid players of the game. While planning for the massacre, Harris said that the killing would be "like fucking Doom", and "it'll be like the LA riots, the Oklahoma bombing, WWII, Vietnam Duke 'Em and Doom all mixed together", and that his shotgun was "straight out of the game".[24] A rumor spread afterwards that Harris had designed Doom levels that looked like the halls of the high school, populated with representations of Harris's classmates and teachers, and that Harris practiced for his role in the shootings by playing these levels over and over. Although Harris did design Doom levels, they were not simulations of Columbine High School.[25]

It still felt empty to me. For every innovation they pushed the games felt incredibly just...empty.
vengfulsoldier I really doubt your company or whatever will succeed if you fail to recognise the fact that id made gaming what it is today
I know about the Columbine thing, I just don't understand the relevance.

well it's probably just you
And while they've been doing that, DICE has been working Battlefield 3 which is gonna leave Call of Duty in the dust.
I bet now they're wishing they spent those years innovating the genre and exploring new technologies and aspects of gaming so they could compete with BF3 instead of just being stuck in the same rut year after year.
When have you ever seen a car company come up with a car and just go "Yeah, that's alright we'll stick with that", and then not go bankrupt?
Ha, you think BF3 will beat CoD's sales? That's absolute horseshit and you know it. While BF3 will be possibly the best FPS in half a decade, it still won't beat CoD. The majority of people are stupid, deal with it. What I'm glad for is that 95% of Facepunch is a very bright community, albeit an asshole at times, and I'm glad I'm a part of it.

How the fuck did I segway that post?

look at the ego on this guy

That's odd since the game I'm actually working on is making references to Doom, Castle Wolfenstein and Quake, thanking them for being a major player in forming gaming as a whole.
I never fucking said they didn't push gaming forward. I've been saying that from personal experience the games have felt empty to me. Beyond the flashy new coding and effects there laid nothing but just...killing.
well it's probably just you
Probably, it was still fun but its a complaint I had about a lot of the early shooters.
I hardly think that being loyal to one video game series over the other makes you bright
I don't understand why the article says he's calling indie devs too "conservative."
Isn't sticking to winning formulas a very conservative philosophy?

Kinda my point :v:

What do you mean? I'm not displaying anything like that; I complimented you basically and you have spat in my face. Or you're being sarcastic, can't really tell at 11:51PM.
My brother plays CoD competitively.
Him and his entire team hate the game.
It's just not fun, and I'm not saying that to be cool or anything, I just don't like it.

Well of course when you play it competitively you'd learn to hate it.

It's the player-base and the fact that the game is balanced on the lowest skill level instead of the highest like games like StarCraft or League of Legends.
It's the player-base and the fact that the game is balanced on the lowest skill level instead of the highest like games like StarCraft or League of Legends.
Uhhh...Starcraft doesn't take skill, you just need to know the right combination and base set up.

Really now? Go play in MLG, do it. You won't last one match.
APM/Micro/Macro are all skill-based and that's how you win in StarCraft.

I've watched a diamond in action. He was just clicking rapidly....The clicking rapidly didn't do diddly as I can issue the same command in a couple of clicks and then go check on a base. I'm saying it takes different set of skills then what you would think. Strategy isn't of those skills.
I also turtle and actually do create these massive attack plans which is why I'd never succeed because I'd get rushed before I can set up proper defenses.
Carmack just lost a shit ton of respect from me by pulling this shit.
Well, he's a businessman, what do you expect? His first and main goal is making the video game profitable. Not saying I approve of it, but it's what they do.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Making_of_Doom
H-h-holy shit, the original story draft of DOOM was written by the man who voiced Walton Simons? (See: WITHIN SIX MONTHS (Vol XIII, Section 37), and Desperate (VOL 13-10-XII))
Also, I find it odd the way Carmack (Whom IMO ran ID into the ground not too different from the way Bobby Kotick ran Activision into the ground) dismissed having a story in DOOM, as it would be as pointless as having a story in porn, which IMO sounds insanely idiotic, I mean, he is comparing 2 unrelated subjects. A story in a shooter makes the player feel like there is a purpose (As proven by MGS), wheras the poorly thought out mention of porn, well... Um... IIRC, furry porn did not exist in 1992, thus invalidating his point.

Actually, he's their lead programmer. I don't know where he is with the business end.
no, he pretty much is disapproving of people trying to bring something fresh to the table
Quoting first page because this post really grinds my gears but
He isn't saying he disapproves of innovation. He disapproves of the fact they have to be assholes about it. Nobody said that a prerequisite for making something fresh and exciting is pissing on the old, in fact that's a shitty mentality. Just like modern artists who think portraits aren't art just because they're pictures of people who already exist.
It's all well and good if you make something nice that's fun and different and even a little broken if it makes me more entertaining. But thinking it makes your dick bigger than anyone elses is still being an egotistical asshole no matter how fun and innovative your game is.
I don't hate Call of Duty or Halo. I don't like them either. They don't affect me. I can ignore them, they don't pop up on my steam or post on the forums I read about themselves. People do that. Just like they do the exact same about Minecraft or Terraria or whatever else.
In the end these things are all opinions, and if you can turn a buck off a popular opinion, go for it. People who don't like it are just going to talk to other people who don't like it in some kind of sperg hate loop and get mad over the fact that someone else spends money on things they don't like.
In short: fuck yourself, your posts read like political commentaries written by a presidential candidate, every god damn one of you
